Firing Philip Fulmer was the worst mistake a major program has ever made

He got fired because his record over his last 5 years was barely better than Butch's was.

Let's test that, shall we?

Fulmer 2004 to 2008

Overall 39-24 62%
Conf. 24-16 60%

Jones. 2013 to 2017

Overall 34-27 56%
Conf. 14-24 37%

Bowls

Fulmer 2-1
Jones. 3-0

Division Championship

Fulmer. 2
Jones. 0

Plus, Fulmer appeared twice in SEC championship games during the same time, Butch has none.

Fulmer was also ranked in top 15 twice, top 25 three times, Butch never finished higher than 23 (top 25 twice).

Fulmer lost to eventual national championship twice in same time frame, which is major reason he didn't have Championship those years.

Don't think they really compare.

i'm glad we didn't have a losing season under fulmer, glad recruiting hadn't fallen, glad we didn't lose to wyoming... Oh wait.

i want you morons to stop harping about the wyoming game,,, that was the week they fired fulmer and the players quit, much like what just happened at florida,,,,,,, he was not fired after wyoming it was the monday before

simpleton ignorance. Fulmer stated publicly on many occasions that he was "still hungry to coach" and "still had fire in his belly". He put his name in the hat at usf, uol, where he interviewed and kansas, where he also interviewed.

I guess him saying he was still interested in coaching isn't enough proof for dumbares

you're a dumb ass too if you want to resort to name calling

Ehh... His last 4 were pretty similar.

Gotta love how people play with statistics to prove a point. If the numbers don't work - change the boundary conditions - if that gets called out, move 'em more. You know that game with the inverted cups and the bean - try that one next time.

Maybe it was a mistake, but you know what? We can't go back in time nine years and make Hamilton give Fulmer one more year to get things back on track.

And even if he had, I don't think Fulmer ever would have contended for a national title again. He would have had more good seasons, probably a couple more trips to the SECCG, might have even slipped in another SEC title if he'd done well in 2010, the year Bama was down a bit. But it would have been 9-4, 10-3 type seasons, with a 7-6 or 6-7 thrown in here and there.

The guys who did all of the recruiting for him in the '90s had moved on. Cut had moved on. And there was no Mike DuBose, Jim Donnan or Gerry DiNardo to take advantage of like there were back then.

The worst mistake wasn't dropping Fulmer. The glory years weren't coming back under him. It was who came after him...

Dropping Fulmer was a mistake. Hell, Tennessee is a punchline for doing it. Yes, the coach hires that came after have been fuel on the fire.

I have said it for years and I will continue to say it. To all of the folks that were in the " fire fulmer " crowd, I have just one question.

Are you happy now? Be honest. Are you happy now? If your being honest the only answer to that question is no.

Fulmer had 2 losing seasons in 14 years. He won our great school a natty and a couple of SEC titles and several SECE titles. We were relevant in college football every single year. Some were better than others but we were in the hunt almost every year.

Everyone wants to compare all coaches to N.Satan. That simply is not possible. He is a once in a lifetime coach that is greatest to ever coach the game PERIOD. He even tops the great Neyland..... Hard for me to say that but he does.

So all of the stupid please take a step back a realize that you had a great thing going but you were so demanding and greedy that you wanted him gone. Take this as a life lesson and hopefully we all become better fans because of it.

Wrong. Firing Coach Majors is what ultimately started all of this mess. You’ve got brilliant tactician who won the SEC three times in a span of six years and dump him after one lackluster season. I suspect Fulmer might have had something to do with it. After 98, the long slow decline began. I was glad to see him canned.

Majors was an alcoholic. He did himself in.

Thank You Captain Obvious.

And then we followed it up by hiring Dooley instead of Cutcliff.

And then hired Butch instead of James Franklin or Dan Mullen.

The last two haven't been real football coaches. UT must hire a real football that knows X's and O's while getting the Jimmies and Joes!

Majors was a horses ass who didn't get along with any of his assistants (ran a record number of them off over the years), his players, the admin, the alumni donors (famously told them off one time) or even your average fan. He consistently underachieved, probably due to his frequent trips into the bottle.

When he was let go, President Joe Johnson said it was about his inability to get along with anyone as much as anything else.

I was glad to see him go, and Fulmer was a definite upgrade. Fulmer was also let go too soon, should have kept him around a few more years and eased into the transition.

It's too late now. Just gotta hope Christie hits a home run on this next hire.

Saban, will go down as the greatest coach ever BUT, Neyland will be the only coach to put a defense on the field that held every opponite scoreless. Saban, only wishes.
