Recruiting Forum Football Talk XLIII

If we accept the notion that Gruden is the top/a realistic candidate right now, then we also likely need to accept that he was the top/a realistic candidate a month or more ago when it was first leaked.

Just don't see him mulling an absolute monster of an offer over for a month. Also would hope he wouldn't string the fanbase along for that amount of time a second time around.

To me it suggests he has already accepted and either the news is behind or Currie/the AD is floating as many possibilities out there as possible in order to announce Gruden on his own terms and when the time is right.

Currie is also no dummy. He's not going to let Gruden think about an offer for that long. No employer would. Gruden is a massive, massive hire, but he's not the end all, be all of Tennessee football. Can't give Gruden all the power and just sit back hoping and praying.

Currie would make it clear to Gruden that there are plenty of other qualified candidates interested. Which actually may be where that list of names 247 reported came from.

I don't believe Rodgers is the guy. I continue to believe that Gruden is a smokescreen and Currie is very happy that he is getting so much attention while he goes out and locks up who he wants. I don't know who that is.

IMO the worst thing Currie could ever do is use Gruden as a “smokescreen”. That would be imprudent and I’m sure someone would advise against that approach.

Hoke was a little cryptic when asked if with the coaching change whether Vandy weekend would still be a major recruiting weekend. He kind of smiled and said "We'll see."

I think Currie has let him behind the curtain a little bit on what is going to happen.

Soon.

Why the hell is everyone on the Hill bending over backwards to kiss Jones' ass? I just don't understand it.

I'm not asking anyone to speak ill of the dead, but why the concerted effort to praise him so much?

Lol.

He didn't answer really anything in the presser. He handled it classy I thought but he didn't answer anything.

Who is bending over backwards? I heard some generalized pleasantries from Currie and Hoke about Jones. That's about it.

There's also the possibility that Jones is actually a good man and we're hearing from butthurt people with axes to grind about how awful he is/was.

I was thinking similar today. How long does someone need to think about things. Can't imagine several weeks.

You are bad at math and not funny or informed. Early signing period is Dec. 20th we will have a coach in place before then per Curries discussion with our recruit Martinez. Stop touching stuff

not nearly as bad as you are at grammar.

I seriously think he loves the VOLS (His kid goes here) so I don't think he'd string us along to get attention or a raise or play one against the other as some think. That would hurt the program if they are waiting around on him, and he would have to know that.

That would honestly shock me in Today's football culture.

No argument here, it's crazy...especially for a team that has been decimated by injuries for the past few years.

So, let the players decide about S & C but let's put them in pads the day before a game. It's beyond baffling.

Just posted this in Trey Deans thread as well...

From Chad Simmons on VQ just now...

Trey Dean planned to announce his de-commitment from Tennessee today around noon ET. To be frank; I had the story typed up with quotes from him and it sits in the admin now because he told me he has changed his mind and that he will just sit back now and see what happens.

A call from Currie is what changed things.

Dean said, "The athletics director called me and he told me Tennessee is about to hire a great head coach. He told me that I can [still] be the face of the Tennessee."

Not too many schools have been in pursuit of Dean in recent months, but he did say Alabama has remained in contact and that he is planning to take an official visit there.

Currie doing work. Gruden soon.

This. But I thought his body language gave the impression he already had his man, and that most of us would be happy with the hire.

This is my belief as well. I think there was a discussion over the last month or so about what it would take from a compensation standpoint and an organizational structure (control) standooint. And we have been working to meet his request. But no final agreement could be made until we demonstrated we can meet his request and we have an official open position for him.

Now we have an open position and have presented our package to him including compensation and organization structure and Gruden is considering the offer. I would expect Currie to have given Gruden a timeline for his decision. And we are now waiting for his acceptance or rejection of the offer.

Lots of assumptions here but this is what I think is going on.

Love this so much. This is the kind of AD we need at this school. Even "if" Gruden isn't locked up, he's rolling up his sleeves and recruiting for us. Starting to really like this guy.

Not everyone hates him. Peerless Price said he was a really good guy and that Jones went out of his way to be nice to him and his family. I guess there will be lots of differing opinions. Chuck Smith was on the radio in ATL right before the season and he takled about how much he loved Jones.
