Hubbs was asked for his top 3. He gave this:

Hubbs proving my point from my earlier posts.

Job is arguably more attractive than it has ever been, and we're willing to pay top dollar.

Why can't we attract a top tier candidate?

Will be very very interesting to watch unfold...

Realistic list: I think Mullen is on there. I would call Gruden to make sure he doesn't want it. I like Doug Marrone, but I don't think the timing would work out there. If you are going to play 6+ million then I would kick the tires with Jimbo Fisher
Hubbs posted this in another thread asking for the VQ writer’s top 3.

I can't believe I'm in here defending Currie, but if he's told Hubbs/Thamel anything (which I doubt), it's misinformation.

I wouldn't necessarily say it's misinformation- could be trial balloons. I'm also not saying it's definitively any of these guys, but these are reporters that actually do have credibility, instead of some guy named Beaver on a message board. So while I'm not firing Currie based on what these two have put out tonight, it does give me pause.

Over/under on fans checking out if an underwhelming hire is made?

I will delete my Volnation account and block this website so I'm not tempted to come back. I'll limit myself to tuning in on Saturdays next fall and force myself to learn how to be content with simply making a bowl game.

I won't come back till either Saban retires and/or we end the Bama-UT rivalry game.

I'm 95% convinced that game is killing us.

And this hire is going to be my deciding factor.

It should give you real pause. Chris Lowe downplaying the UT job should give you pause. Pete Thamel, who is extremely well regarded and connected, downplaying the UT job should give you pause.

Just like when the media overwhelmingly said we'd be terrible this year and Butch would be fired. We should have paused.

We need to come to serious grips with what our program has become and ask hard questions about why?

Yes, Chris Low as well. These are well respected reporters, and each, for one reason or another, have a legitimate connection to the university, unlike, say, Jordan Rodgers throwing names out there.

Well...if Hubbs is the AD mouthpiece and is putting out lackluster names, and Thamel's source is Currie, and he is putting out lackluster names, then that is concerning.

Lots of assumptions...especially the Thamel piece

Just cuz hubbs gets fed some info doesn't mean he gets it all. He clearly didn't get the baseball hire.

Thamel is a FL/Urban guy. Trying to help his boy Mullen

And one percent of the people that care about the football hire cared about the baseball hire. Much more incentive to be on top of this one than baseball.

Well, I'm not saying we should be celebrating or anything, but from what I know about John Currie, he doesn't care enough about what the fans think to put out trial balloons. And he's way too proud of his indiscreet process to feed info to a prominent national reporter and maybe the most trusted local reporter.

Maybe so, but he poo pooed Mullen coming to Tennessee. He's also been said to be close to Currie. I have no idea of the connection there, so I'm working off of assumptions there.

Maybe. Sounds like what you know is about the same as what I know. I just don't like what I'm hearing tonight.

Georgia hired a coordinator. UF hired a coordinator and then a minor leaguer. LSU struck out on the guys they wanted and got stuck with a retread who was acting as interim. Those are three better SEC jobs than ours and none of them have been able to hire a so-called top tier candidate in recent years.

Hiring is hard. Taking someone else’s proven winning coach is hard. It’s not just Tennessee that’s had trouble.

It's clear that the media, especially our own, feel that our program has fallen a couple of tiers from its lofty historical position, and think that our hire will reflect this. Based on our last 2 hires, it's hard to blame them. I think that's more what you're seeing from Thamel and Hubbs.

Andy Staples, on the other hand, said Tennessee would be an easier rebuild than UF.
