Good Morning, VN.
And as Val Kilmer said in "Tombstone": Well, that was a bust.
I quit watching at the half. Apparently, I quit right before UT did. In hindsight, the 2017 season has been a slow, painful descent into the murky depths of "will we ever be good again". In foresight, I honestly don't think we've bottomed out yet. The LSU game is a loss. The current state of the roster, injuries, poor coaching, poor execution, and the kicked dog mentality of this team all but guarantee a loss next Saturday. This team has surrendered record yards, points, and likely losses this season. No excuse will suffice, and nothing short of a miracle will salvage what little is left of the 2017 season, and Volunteer Pride. This will be one for the record books. Go ahead and stock up on liquor.
It will come down to the Vandy game, and a question of "who wants it more?" Even at home, and even against Vandy, I don't like our chances. At that point, being 4-7...with a lame duck staff...a disgruntled and vocal fanbase in the stands...and with nothing to play for but pride...it would not surprise me to see UT play just well enough to lose.
It says a lot that at this point, we would take 5-7 as a good thing. The trashcan with "Team 121" on it turned out to be an omen. Should have used a dumpster. And lighter fluid.
So...now we wait and see who will inherit this hot mess, and how long it will take them to turn things around. With the current roster, recruiting picture, and what-have-you, I have to think that regardless of the new staff, it's probably 2020 before we can make a serious run at the SEC again. Three more years. Lines take a year or two to build and gel, and we have exactly one lineman on the roster who could start for any other SEC team. So don't order the "Jon Gruden 2018 SECCG ticket package" just yet. It's going to take some time to clean up this mess.
But it all starts with the right head coach. Cross your fingers, say your prayers, light your candles, sacrifice your chickens, and most importantly mail those checks to the UTAD. This ain't gonna be easy, or cheap.
Go Vols.
