I have a question, and pardon me if it has been addressed. But we don't currently have a coaching vacancy. If Butch were fired Saturday night/Sunday morning, isn't there some state law that requires all state jobs be posted for X number of days? I thought I remembered that being an issue last go 'round.

Preciate it in advance.

Yes, it has, but this is a great question. Typically governmental jobs must be posted, however, there is an exception for jobs that require extremely specialized skills, knowledge, or experience.

In this case, the criteria for being HC at a place like TN requires that the person have been, at minimum, a DC or OC at another school. Considering the very limited number of potential applicants it doesn't make sense, from a policy perspective, to require an AD to wait to hire.

The policy is aimed at ensuring the public (potential employee pool) has adequate notice of opportunities. We like this because is reduces the likelihood of jobs going only to members of an insular group. It encourages diversity, which is a good thing.

However, in the circumstances of a HC, all interested parties will be aware, sought out, courted, and vetted.

Assuming Gruden is the guy and there is at least a push to keep Jones through the end of the season...

Would a player suspension and possible arrest in the next week or two cause Jones to be let go sooner? Curious to your thoughts on whether a move to an interim would happen.

Great answer! Thank you for that, your patience, and kindness. Those things are few and far between in this forum.

It shouldn't. He can't be held responsible 24/7 for the actions of 100 players. Maybe if he handled it wrong afterwards though

Also the reason for an MOU to be used as well.

My hunch (its only a hunch) is that all parties involved have an interest in not moving towards an interim.

  • Currie has expressed an interest in not making a coach change mid season.
  • Gruden, as the founder of the FFCA, has a public image he'd like to maintain of being good to the coach he is replacing.
  • Butch, as much as we may want to see him go, seems like he has genuine care for his players. He'd like to finish the season with them.
  • The players like Butch, and have played hard for him. They may want to send him out on a high note/finish what they started.
  • The assistants have major issues (as reported), and having an interim may be more distracting than just letting Butch finish out.
