Official Jon Gruden Thread 30

I just think that the season is wwwwaaaayyyy far down on the list of reasons to announce or not announce.

I’ll agree with that because as we have said, the hire is more important than the fire. But thinking about optics, Fulmer involvement, Gruden and FFCA, I just don’t see how anything happens midseason at this point. If they were going to go that route, it would have already been done (assuming Gruden is good to go of course)

You lost me at "VERY good friend in the AD". Thus far, it seems very little if ANY of the information has come from the AD side of things. Currie's running a tight ship and nothing will come from the AD side as long as Butch is still the HC.

Fair enough - and I like I said this doesn't have anything to do with signing Gruden or an MOU. Just gives a reason for optimism is all I am saying.

But if the things we've collectively come to believe are true, specifically that the MOU was signed last Friday, then the opportunity to announce hasn't been there. Getting puzzle pieces together this week seems pretty likely. Especially with the very many reports we're getting of potential assistants being contacted.

What do you think is the main factor with the timing?

I'm currently liking the "Gruden as FFCA honcho doesn't want to appear to be poaching the job" theory.

I honestly believe Gruden is an ethical and upstanding guy. As he runs the FFCA, I also believe that he is a coach's advocate and will do all he can to protect the image of current coaches. He will not want Butch (reportedly a friend)to lose face and get a "slap in the face" for a midseason firing.
Combine this with Currie's desire to protect the university image for future hires by not firing midseason, and I honestly expect this to go till after Vandy.

If he is announced after Vandy, then does a little talk at UT QBClub at that last scheduled time slot, followed by opening up all the recruiting Official visits between there and the early signing day, and lastly the explosively hyped media and recruiting I honestly believe won't skip a beat, and may even be augmented.

In short. I believe Butch coaches through candy then rides off quietly into the sunset while the cannons start overheating in the stadium when Gruden is announced.

SOON!

Preacher has been awfully quiet too. Hmmmm. Surely we needed an insider who could summon up some divine intervention to get us Gruden! I’m feeling really good about everything has played out!

greetings. been out in the rain doing deliveries today.
finally eating a bite, catching up.

i'm still on the gruden train.
the BOT $340 million vote sealed it for me.

you don't agree to that kind of money without making some concessions.

it's on ... just a matter of time, imo.

I was in the camp of the firing occurring after KY. But I now believe it will be after the season or when we are statistically unable to make a bowl (the 8 loss thing is important to me personally).

The AD has to consider the Seniors and does not want to be seen as pulling the trigger too quickly. Although JG is important, I believe that Currie has a plan and regardless of the outcome, it will be on his timeline.

As I have said before, I know someone that was very high up in the AD's office, and they think Currie is very shrewd and every decision will be well thought out.

From A friend:

I see no scenario where anything is leaked or announced about Gruden until there is an opening. Until there is an opening there is not going to be a verifiable leak. Once there is an opening, if the next head coach is Jon Gruden it will be announced well before anyone can "leak" anything.

Bingo.
Forgot to add that she loves UT football.
You’d be surprised at some of the people that she has “worked” with in Knoxville. Will never disclose any names here due to privacy protection, family loyalties, and possible lawsuits.
Will only drop one Vol nug.....one of them rhymed with Train Miffin.

Knowing what kind of drama a coach turning us down in the past caused (people were losing their minds because Tennessee had somebody say NO to us, and I don't mean Gruden), why in the world would Hubbs entertain the thought that Gruden might be a possibility?

I thought I heard it's up to $360 million now? I forgot where I heard that or read that though. But, I tend to agree with you.

Agree completely. This to me is telling. If you kick a billionaire in the stones over a coach, I don't see them opening up a checkbook to help with a project of this magnitude. (yes I know a great deal of the money isn't from boosters, but a chunk will)

Just spoke with a friend in the AD. Currie had Haslam come in yesterday. Haslam gave a "Leadership" speach to the athletics department. Butch, Haslam, and Currie were extremely buddy-buddy. The mood around the office is that Butch is staying and that Currie is trying to get everyone on board with it.

"Hey everyone, Haslam is here. He likes Butch. So we should all like Butch. Hooray!"

Your friend lied to you and shouldn't be considered a friend anymore.

The thing is, once potential assistants are being contacted, we are looking at the dam bursting with the info chain. As I mentioned the other night, once one knows, the whole world knows.

If (IF for those reading impaired) an MOU was signed, Gruden is in pocket and he's searching for a staff, there is no way the AD can keep a lid on it. Right now, if things are as we suspect, everything is compartmentalized into the AD and Gruden camp. But once that spills over into a new staff? It's entirely out of their control and someone will talk and info will get out there. Intentional or accidental, that kind of thing has to propensity to blow the lid off any boom that might occur.

7 losses excludes us from a bowl, IIRC. We don't have the APR to get an invite at 5-7.

Exactly. Time is if the essence.
