Recruiting Forum Football Talk XLII

He's asking whether his word choice of "will" and "can" vs "would" and "could" indicates a slip up as to LWS's level of certainty of Gruden coaching here.

Personally, I wouldn't read too much into it.

If I were making that post I would use "would" and "could" but I guess some would use "will" and "can" talking hypothetically.

Look, the truth is that any hire is going to be a risk on some level. People will always talk after the fact about how they knew coach X was going to be a success or was going to flame out. That's easy. But you never really know.

James Franklin was on the hotseat entering 2016 and now people are putting him on a plane with Saban and Meyer. Speaking of Meyer, he's in year 6 and getting blown out by freaking Iowa. Most everyone knew Saban would do well at Alabama, but absolutely no one could have predicted he'd do *this* well.

There is risk in absolutely everything. That's true for Gruden, for Mullen, for Taggart, for whoever.

That is where I am with Gruden.

Him flaming out is definitely a bigger possibility than people are suggesting.

He's a very good football coach. And he's a B list celebrity so recruiting is going to be a breeze. However, I do question if he would be able to identify talent on the high school level at a high rate right away. Also I very much doubt he would enjoy recruiting and the ass kissing it takes to sign a 17 year old WR.

And we don't know if he knows how to cheat effectively. Every program does it - does he know how to get away with it?

It would definitely hinge on the staff he put together. I'm sure he knows all of that though.

Gruden, during the pregame on MNF the other night, said something like "live your hopes, not your fears". Now, while he was talking about Green Bay's Brett Hundley, I couldn't help but think he was perhaps referencing himself.... ? Maybe not, i just thought it was interesting the way he said, his facial expressions, and the obvious UT coaching drama.

"He just said Eric Berry went to the University of Tennessee! NO! NO! It's the way he said it. He goes 'Eric Berry. Out of TENNESSEE!!' Like he was winking and whatnot."

Had my .50 cal muzzleloader in hand when I read that post this morning. I couldn't reply because my fingers were too cold.

True, but the level of risk is very different. Saban and Meyer were as close to no risk as it gets. As you said everyone knew Saban would win but nobody saw this coming. Meyer's won 89% of his games at OSU and a national title.

I'd say Gruden and Kelly are the lowest risk hires out there, but they all have question marks.

Hahaha. You are a ****ing loser, d00d.

I made a simple observation regarding what I found to be an interesting comment from someone who may be considering a return to coaching. Nothing more, nothing less. Then, you decided to be a prick about it. Congratulations.

Gruden would be worth every penny.

Our program is irrelevant and has been for most of the last 20 years.

He changes that the moment he signs.

We can’t say that about any other candidate.

Well, if he's like everyone else on this board, he's certainly not at work or class...

I’m not going to lie, these last 3-4 weeks my productivity at work has been so much less. Luckily it’s the slow part of the year for us and when the holidays hit it will be even slower.

I think that's part of the allure of Gruden for me. I think he would put an all-star staff together.

Agreed look at his coaching tree that are NFL hcs now... he would be someone others want to learn under. I'd expect a mix of NFL guys and college guys that have been HC before.

Keeping G would make most sense at RB being our recruiting coordinator. If I were him I would bring in a guy like Zook. Kevin Steele could be an guy you look at for D.C. With possibility of Gus not making it beyond this yr. I'd bring some guys in out of work as analyst maybe a freeze but don't know how rules work for analyst and NCAA troubles

Sarge has the most awesome side arm in the world.

Kimber 1911 Tactical Entry II in the lord’s caliber (.45ACP)

Go big or go home!

Kimber's a nice gun, but there are reliable reports of some Kimbers being finicky about feeding certain ammo. Just what I've heard, including from guys whose lives depend on a reliable weapon.

I have a Rock Island compact 1911 (.45), and a Glock 30S (.45). I've ran hundreds of rounds through both, and have never had a malfunction of any type.

To each his own, but I too am a firm believer in the .45, and while money is not the determining factor in selecting a PDW, reliability is.

IMO the argument of Gruden not wanting to deal with 18-20 year old kids is a moot point. The NFL now is by far not the same league that Gruden coached in, and he knows that. At this point 18-20 year olds might be easier to deal with.

Geez man. It reminded me of the Grudenmonium video and just thought it was funny.

Can nobody in here take a joke anymore?
