The fact that many are poo pooing a Mullen hire tells me we are in much better shape this go around.

Y’all would have begged for him when Troy Calhoun was being mentioned in 2012

I'm sure they would have preferred Mullen coaching that Tn team last yr.. imagine what he would have done with Dobbs and that crew

If we get a good coach we will win big. National Championships are normally the result of a good coach getting a transcendent talent on a really talented team.

Clemson - Watson
Auburn - Cam
OSU - Zeke
FSU - Winston
Texas - Young

There are also teams that simply are so good they dominate and it’s not because of one transcendent talent. Miami, Florida, Bama, USC, etc. They can beat you every where.

Mullen could do the latter with the right staff IMO. Not saying he will but saying he could.

Agreed. But, again, we need to be able to have two separate conversations. Comparing Mullen and Taggart to Gruden is a waste of time. He is clearly better and the expectations change drastically if he is hired.

The debate FOR Mullen and Taggart is if Gruden turns us down. That's the only way they become options.
I understand that. Was just answering Hank’s question.

If Mullen surrounds himself with recruiters, then Mullen. If not, Taggart.

Can Mullen win a natty in your opinion?

I think probably not because I think you need a lot of elite athletes to win a natty. I think we'd win a lot of games but against some key opponents I think we'd come up short. Mullen is a good coach, imo, but I think his success is finding players that he can mesh with. I know people think that he would recruit top 10 classes here but I'm skeptical number one that he would be able to do that but more importantly that he would even want to do that. Those aren't his type of players but those are the types of players I think we need to compete at the highest level.

Chris Petersen, everyone agrees is an excellent coach. made the playoffs at the end of the 2016 season - but could not get past Alabama because in my simple opinion Washington's team talent was ranked #24 and was going up against the #1 talented team in the nation. Clemson was #9.

I don't think coaches like Petersen or Mullen attract or even necessarily want the top athletes out of high school. They recruit to their player profiles and systems and then over a number of years develop those talents.

This is rivals recruiting rankings for Washington for the past 2 coaches.

Coaching can sometimes beat talent but coaching alone is not often going to beat both talent and coaching. jmo.

Alex Smith, Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, Dak Prescott

4 QB's coached/recruited by Dan Mullen. The guy knows what he is doing with QB's.

My gosh... you used to kill the Shoop hire, lol

I killed it because I knew there would be a transition period. I said it would pay off long term but we needed to win big last year that's why I wanted JJ to stay.

For much of the same reason I want Shoop to stay now.

What’s the sell on Taggart? Why has he not done well at Oregon?

Was 4-1 then lost his QB l. Has a true freshman QB playing now that was 3rd string. High ceiling guy his overall record is skewed by his year 1 at each school where he took over messes. Take out those and it's a much better overall record.

The key to Taggart is he has shown that at a Power 5 school he can recruit players and asst coaches at a high level. It would be even better in Southeast where his and cristobals main connections are.

He isn't fool proof but it's a lot nicer to be thinking he could be your floor compared to past searches.

From talking with MSU fans the knock on Mullen is that he doesn’t like recruiting. He focuses on 4 or 5 key guys a class and leaves his staff to get the rest.

I don't think that's horrible if the staff has a few ace recruiters.

Bammers, Ga and Florida fans are scoffing at the idea that we could get him, but afraid we will.

Come on Gruden.

He would need a excellent staff to win big. He has some good d coordinators but has struggled keeping them.

Guys, if you saw what he has to work with down here, you’d roll out the carpet. He’s also got a lot of good, young coaches and “take no sh@#” S&C staff.

That said, I’m not convinced you could convince his wife to leave here.

What's happening in this thread is ultimately the same thing I think makes Gruden turn us down.

He cares a lot about his relationships here and he knows the expectations would be for a first time college head coach to win a National Championship in his 2nd year. It's just not realistic.

Shoop defense has been solid but these guys just need a clean slate. I think he probably does too. I think the only guy that Shoop probably is able to stick around with is Mullen possible even then I'm not sure because he might be able to grab someone else with what he can pay here.

Chris Petersen is a clear NC caliber coach IMO, but I don’t think he is in play.

You get a like for using NC instead of "Natty." I am not going to rage quit or anything, but, for fracks sake, can we please stop using the term "Natty?" It just sounds stupid to me.

What’s the sell on Taggart? Why has he not done well at Oregon?

He's having a Kiffin-type year there, IMO. Struggling some because he was not left with great talent, lost a key player (I don't think Kiffin really did), recruiting lights out, and might leave after one year :)
