I'm not a big fan of Mullen but everything I've read claims he is a good developer of talent. Since he has been at MSU he's had 22 players drafted by the NFL. In the 8 years prior to his arrival MSU had 0 players drafted. I used the 247 team talent composite ranking and compared it to the ESPN FPI ranking after week 10 just to see what it would look like. While Alabama and Auburn are even between their talent and FPI rankings, Mullen's MSU squad is the only SEC team with a higher FPI ranking verses his talent ranking. I'm not trying to be fair. I'm just trying to be honest. I don't like the guy but I think there's no denying he has been successful at developing lower rated recruits than probably anyone else in the conference. I still believe that his recruiting at Tennessee would only be marginally better than what we're use to. I could be wrong. I just don't think he has the personality for elite HS talent. He's good with guys who don't have big heads and are driven to work for the payoff. This character in the recruit is a primary focus of his recruiting. I'm looking for an oversized personality to attract and teach elite recruits. I'm not convinced they would listen as much as would be needed to someone like Mullen. I guess you could say I'm looking for an alpha type personality and I see Mullen as not that - but all the evidence seems to suggest he's a first rate teacher for the types of students he recruits. jmo.

Ive been subjected to this dumb motherf@#$s hot takes since he was writing bs stories for the Beacon when we were undergrads. If Im ever back in Knoxville and come across him at a bar, Im gonna knock his drink over and tell him to go somewhere and tweet about it.

I personally dont want Mullen, not because I dont like him, but because Im about tired of the spread. I want an offense thats hard nosed and pro style! There is a lot of shot gun nowadays in pro style, but not all spread. I want I formation and one back sets, and I just dont want any spread out all the time anymore.
From talking with MSU fans the knock on Mullen is that he doesnt like recruiting. He focuses on 4 or 5 key guys a class and leaves his staff to get the rest.
No. I think hes had time to show his ceiling
Which is exactly why I would rather get someone a bit green, but could possibly ascend there
