I agree that you can't put all your eggs in one basket. But I think the names that are being thrown out are way below what this program needs. With the money that's being suggested, we should be able to go get an established, power 5 coach. Maybe even an NFL coach. Don't ask me who but it should be a pretty dang good coach. Frost, Taggart, Norvell or whatever hot name up and comer you want to throw out, may be the next urban, or Saban or dabo. But they could also end up being the next Dooley or Butch. This program is not in a position to risk hiring another up and comer. We need an established, seasoned coach.

If Gruden says no then 8 million to Patterson

If the other mystery P5 coach reaching out is ACC, my money is on Babers. Offensive mind stuck in upstate NY and he’s seen Tennessee first hand

If these parties are in play, and I assume some are not, this is the pecking order, IMO

Gruden
Peterson

Frost
Taggart

Mullen

We are in good shape if any of these play out.

Folks gon have to talk me off the Taggart train. Go ahead and try...

Lol

Grudenmania is in full swing. Thought I would check the thread... Fresh one began less than 36 hours ago...

I have Mullen and Taggert swapped. Not really trying to sell anyone one way or the other.

Nice! Let me know how it goes. I know it won’t be perfectly smooth but I’m excited to try it and if it’s good enough I’m going to cut the cord when my direct TV contract is up.

I have an old router and about 20 devices on it at any given time so that doesn't help. I just bought a 55" tv and sit 7 feet away from it so it's a little too close, told my wife we'll have to buy a new house that will fit the tv. I was able to watch the Press game earlier with no blackout. You could definitely cut the cord if you can use a friends user name and password for network apps.

You know my stance there.

I’d like to hear a takedown on Taggart though. Context matters, which many would refute my Mullen takedown with, fairly enough

Question for me on Taggert is longevity. Biggest question is why the heck would he be looking to leave a program like Oregon one year in? Does UT really offer something Oregon doesn't besides a roster he can string some easier wins at?
Butch did a reasonable job getting prior teams to some success and he recruits lights out too, but he cannot build a program. Sumlin is another in that vein.

Not saying Taggert is either but with Mullen you see consistent performance and committment to a program.

USF was a perennial 8 win team under Jim Leavitt when he left in 2009. In 3 years Skip Holtz destroyed USF with 8 then 5 then 3 wins. And they had never won double digit games in school history

O'Leary won 10,12, and 9 games in the 3 years preceding the winless 2015 year.

Historically they might not be vastly different but the state of the respective programs when Frost and Taggart took them over are vastly different IMO.
Fair enough, I didn't realize O'Leary won that much there. I can say I haven't really followed either program.

I wouldn't mind if Gruden stole Eliah Drinkwitz from NC St for his OC. He was rumored to have met with him a week or so ago. Has that program playing well.

He went to Western Kentucky. This is about as close to home and a huge job. He’s mainly worked in the south east. Same reason Wilcox went back west as well.

Not that i am buying into Taggart, but he sounds a lot like Jimmy Johnson. Not the greatest coach in the world, but can evaluate talent/recruit...and surrounds himself with really good assistant coaches.

You just described Dabo Swinney perfectly

I’ve really enjoyed slingTV for the last couple of years. The sports tier includes the sec network

I didn't say they were on the same level as Butch or Dooley. I said they could turn into the next Dooley or Butch. Like I said they could be the next Saban or Urban too. Neither have proven that they can do it at a big time program yet.

If you continue to think you have to go get the next bright shining star from lower tier programs you're going to continue to strike out more often than you're going to hit a home run. This program doesn't need another experiment. We need a coach that knows how to build a championship program.

Also, you don't pay them a little bit more money, you pay them a lot more money.

This. Bama, Michigan. Ohio State didn't go get the next up and commer. They got the best college coach money could buy. To play in that league we must also. Kelly, Patterson. Gruden, maybe Mullen. That should be our target, nothing less.

I'm not a big fan of Mullen but everything I've read claims he is a good developer of talent. Since he has been at MSU he's had 22 players drafted by the NFL. In the 8 years prior to his arrival MSU had 0 players drafted. I used the 247 team talent composite ranking and compared it to the ESPN FPI ranking after week 10 just to see what it would look like. While Alabama and Auburn are even between their talent and FPI rankings, Mullen's MSU squad is the only SEC team with a higher FPI ranking verses his talent ranking. I'm not trying to be fair. I'm just trying to be honest. I don't like the guy but I think there's no denying he has been successful at developing lower rated recruits than probably anyone else in the conference. I still believe that his recruiting at Tennessee would only be marginally better than what we're use to. I could be wrong. I just don't think he has the personality for elite HS talent. He's good with guys who don't have big heads and are driven to work for the payoff. This character in the recruit is a primary focus of his recruiting. I'm looking for an oversized personality to attract and teach elite recruits. I'm not convinced they would listen as much as would be needed to someone like Mullen. I guess you could say I'm looking for an alpha type personality and I see Mullen as not that - but all the evidence seems to suggest he's a first rate teacher for the types of students he recruits. jmo.

Unfortunately this will be the comments from those that don't watch football outside of SEC. he is down to his 3rd string QB. They were starting to play at high level before the QB was injured

I watch plenty of football outside of the SEC..get off your pedestal and stop acting all high and mighty.

I think Butch proved that it isn’t THAT hard to get good talent to come to Knoxville.

But I agree that how well Mullen would be able to keep top talent around and work with them is a question mark.

I say that as someone would be really happy if we landed Mullen.

I have mentioned this a few times because I think it's relevant with how we view that baseball hire. Currie offered that job to south Alabama head coach and was turned down. So TV wasn't the first choice

Yes, that's true. But, if seems he had a very viable backup plan.

Well....cultural fit, taxes, and family being happy where they are comes to mind. Fans often ignore the family. Same goes for the assistant coaches and their families. A lot goes into "fit"....and momma being happy is a biggie.
