Changing the subject a bit, what do you all see as the 2 biggest things on each side of the ball the next coach has to straighten out for us to be competitive in 2018? I’m considering S&C to be a given. But other than that:

Offense

1. OL. Gotta get tougher and more disciplined in the trenches. Also need to get Mays back on board if possible. He’ll have a chance to make a Trey Smith like impact for us.

2. WR. We’ve had way too much trouble with guys being able to consistently be where they need to be, getting open, and making the catch. If I’m the new coach, I try to find out if I can get JJ to come back if possible (no idea if there’d be some sort of issue with the rest of the team regarding him ghosting or not).

Defense

1. DB. We’ve been surprisingly solid here this year, but we’ll be losing Wiggins, Moseley, Martin, and likely Gaulden going into 2018. Gotta make sure we can keep the young guys we have on campus around and bring in plenty of young guys (EEs, if possible) to compete here.

2. DL. Most of these guys should be coming back next year. Should. Gotta make sure you keep around as many as possible and more importantly, get them to play to their potential. We’ve seen flashes from DT and Phillips this year, but we’ve gotta get the interior guys to play more dominantly as well if we’re gonna give the young DBs a chance to get settled. Bringing along Butler and Johnson at DE needs to be a priority also. Hopefully they can get Kongbo to realize he’s a 3 technique DT as well.

Edit: also, gotta replace Daniels at Punter. Sneakily big hole in the team potentially.

Solutions

1. hire Jon gruden
2. Lock down Trevor/Fields/Martinez as your future QB
3. Lock in Mays/Carvin on OL and steal Davis from bama
4. Move Richmond to G or C. Then set your OL as Tatum/Smith/Richmond/Mays/Hall
5. Move Kongbo to DT
6. Move Abernathy and Byrd to CB

We have enough talent for next year to beat everyone but Bama and UGA if it is utilized. I do fret what a major scheme change might do for short run.

So we are ok with hiring a guy with a 45-50 record overall. Might as well keep what we have. No way this should be ok. May be what we end up with and if so I hope he wins them all, but would like to think we could do better.

No to keeping what we have. Is rank it like this:

A drunk goat
Teddy Ruxpin
Ray Goff
Mike Shula

Butch Jones

Jeremy Pruitt

Byrd to CB could be a big help potentially.

Not sure I love Tatum as the LT unless he gets a lot bigger and stronger. I thought Smith looked decent there last week. He might be our best bet there

Yep. Curries baseball hire shows he holds recruiting ability in high regard. So we shall see what he comes up with.

I have mentioned this a few times because I think it's relevant with how we view that baseball hire. Currie offered that job to south Alabama head coach and was turned down. So TV wasn't the first choice

The S Bama coach is a heck of coach so not exactly a bad thing either

Mullen vs Taggart is tough for me. I do not know much about Taggart. I’m not convinced that Mullen’s ceiling is that much higher than what he’s done at MSU.

Recruiting advantage probably Taggart. Coaching advantage? I don’t know.

Just bring me Gruden

Change the system to an attacking style OL and we probably see how talented these kids really are. It's pretty clear it's scheme not players/coaching as the OL issue. Strength doesn't help either. Bunch of tiny OL need to pump some roids

People need to understand there are two coaching searches going on right now.

On one side we are negotiating with Gruden.

On the other side we are betting possible alternatives.

It's like you guys can't have competing thoughts. The "just go get Gruden!" posts are a waste of time when discussing Taggart, Mullen and others. This coaching search runs through Chucky, and if we're in a position to talk about others, it's because he has turned us down.

If we could have all those guys on campus and healthy, I think we could get decent play out of that group at OL, if they’re well coached. Tatum has gotta get bigger and stronger though. Hopefully Niehaus can compete at OT somewhere. I kinda think Richmond could be a better fit at OG potentially.

The good thing about DB is that our starting safeties should be able to help out the CBs a bit. But guys like Shamburger, Osborne, Labruzza, and maybe a freshman or two are gonna have to step up big time there.

Can't believe I forgot about Richmond. Would like to see what he could do at G or RT with better coaching.

We do have some good young talent still.

Taggart and Mullen are almost even coaches to me.

I'd take Taggart because he can 'cruit and 'cruit well.

I hope were not betting on possible alternatives. NCAA won’t like that.

If Willie t brought leavitt and Cristobal with him, that's a hell of a set of coordinators...

I'd take him, especially with those two guys

Rather have Leavitt or Shoop stay?

I am all aboard the train for Shoop staying

Taggart and Frost are equal in my book. The staff he was able to build at Oregon was very impressive, and having the Harbaughs vouch so much is a plus.
