Official Jon Gruden Thread XXVII

JAV outright said that everyone on the UT side was rowing in the same direction and that the ball was in Gruden's court. Pretty much what LWS referred to when he said it was the bride who kept saying no. I haven't believed before or now that Haslam is blocking anything or attempting to. Gruden will say yes or no to our great offer. All we can do is hope it MGCA. #MakeGrudenCoachAgain

I believe that too. I'm at 65%.

I agree. It all just boils down to whether he wants to coach college football or not. No other obstacles.

I don't buy that Gruden keeps saying 'no.' At least not to the point where UT is left guessing what he needs if that is indeed the case. I'm of the belief that we don't get to this point unless some serious legwork has already been done and Gruden's needs and wants have been identified and accounted for already.

Do boosters row in the same direction if there's not a lot more than a 50/50 shot of interest from the Gruden camp? Intuition says they don't. In fact, I would say the repercussions of "swinging and missing" with Gruden are too severe to leave that up to pure chance. In other words, I don't think there's enough leverage to get everyone rowing in the same direction with even the possibility of a Mike Bobo type hire.

I know, I know - logical thinking and the UT Athletic Department don't always go hand-in-hand (as we've seen the past 10 years). In spite of the maddening silence coming from the AD, there's too much smoke to chalk up to 'chance' and 'coincidence' this time around. Even though hindsight will always be 20/20, I truly believe it is happening. I just hope I'm right.

You don't know how to translate Ape?

He's saying he's glad UT is really going all out on replacement for Jones. He's also pretty tickled they appear to have Gruden in their sights and he's going to throw a nice high society cocktail party if they hire him with the finest wines and cheeses.

He also said he's tired of people coming in here with negative attitudes and wishes the world could be a more positive place. He said we shouldn't be fighting, but working together towards a common goal.

C'mon man, everyone knows Ape-ese.

Such a warm and positive message from a primate that peed on a bush just a few hours ago.....

I think he will stall to see if the tampa job comes open. It has been reported that there is mutual interest.

Why would he be eager to go back and coach for the same organization that fired him a few years after winning their first and only Super Bowl for them?

Ironically, what caused his firing was getting beat at home by his previous team..the Raiders in a game where the Raiders and Jamarcus Russell prevented him from making the playoffs. True story.

Don't get me wrong...still want Gruden 100%...just hard to see him going back to Tampa.

Why would we get you wrong? You are arguing against why he would go to Tampa and that you want him 100%

I’ve been following all the Gruden threads.....have spent hours and day after day reading in an effort to stay updated. I have never or yet to see the thread so quiet with the main posters of this thread. What has happened for the flow of info to basically slow to a crawl?

The word has been for a while, when this thing gets close the Beaver would go silent. I am taking this silence as a good thing.

Grude morning, Volnation!

I haven't seen anywhere that there is mutual interest. Why go back somewhere he was fired and ran out of town by? That's like going back to an ex wife who divorced you for another guy then waited 8 years to decide you were the right man all along. Not happening.

This is from another forum and there is no insider info claimed:
Take this with a grain of salt, but a friend has a source, who correctly predicted Barnes and our bowl a few days before it was public, and he says we have Gruden at 5 years 8 per. Again, this is an extreme reach, but he has not been wrong yet.

Also, JAV said:

The chances are as good as they will ever be;

Also this, again from another forum:

Not VQ. 3 different sources. Still low odds it happens.
In East Tennessee. Has absurd offer. Hasn't said no this whole time. Been negotiating. No one is opposed. Any statements that academics or other boosters are in the way are false.
Sorry to be vague, but back when everything went quiet in October, I was told to be quiet as well. I'll share this now because it seems we're to the point it no longer matters.
UT has pushed all the chips in. If it doesn't happen now it's because he folds and walks away.

It is my belief that everyone is now on the same page and the ball is in Gruden's court. If 8 is the number, then his annual salary will be higher than Saban's. He may have already accepted or turned it down, but the sudden silence from all sources certainly means something.
(edit to add more info)

So did anyone ever determine why Butch was not suspended due to the Bk investigation? Did Currie unruffle the feathers of the parents?

Southern Mississippi at Tennessee

Saturday, 7:30 p.m. ET

What is it going to take for Butch Jones to get fired? This is a question that is weighing on a lot of Tennessee fans’ minds. The Volunteers are 3-5 and have lost four straight games, including South Carolina at home and Kentucky in Lexington. Southern Mississippi comes to Knoxville for Tennessee’s homecoming. If the Golden Eagles are able to capitalize on the Volunteers' miscues to win the game, fans of the orange and white may have an answer to the question above.

Pick Southern Mississippi

Probably no credible proof that he knew about the concussion to the extent that it would support good cause for firing. If you use something like that for a pretext you probably make him unhirable for awhile, which means no mitigation of the buyout. Without a smoking gun there's not much UTAD can do here.

Grude morning, all. It’s game day...the Gruden will be in attendance. Let’s hope for a dominating performance that leads to a late season run building momentum for a fantastic season next year under new leadership.

Regardless of this season's final w/l record, Butch will be gone. Just need some patience. Maybe sooner than later, but still look for 11/27/17 as the day of reckoning.

Makes sense to keep him all season. The bluest font you can imagine for that first sentence

Grude morning fellow travelers on the path to higher football enlightenment. I watched the Friday night debauchery that took place all over this thread. Oh to be young and enthused again.
Perhaps today is the day when our football fortunes will turn and we can begin the climb out of the pit of misery we now find ourselves mired deep within. Let us all hope and pray that this long nightmare is over and brighter days are just around the corner.

With all the smokescreens we have been provided and the perception of internal power struggles, I actually do think it makes sense to keep him, IF:

1) Currie indeed has his new coach (GRUDEN...we all hope), and

2) Currie wants to make a fire/hire announcement, and

3) internal coaching staff strife exists, and

4) can somewhat reduce his buyout

I say this because an interim at this point, IF all the above is true as some have indicated, provides absolutely no benefit other than to appease restless fans, which I admit I am one! But I also do not want ol'Butchy boy to walk away with more "free" money, especially if it means him not having to do a damn thing (i.e., not having to "coach" the rest of the season). He started this mess and should have to weather through it until he is $hit canned (11/27/17). Also, at this point, the recruiting issue will continue to be a swinging pendulum, with or without an interim. If a recruit commits to a "coach" and not the University, that is his own decision. But IF Currie has THE MAN in play, recruits will commit based on HIS name and to play for a national championship at TENNESSEE! Go Vols! Soon.....
