We all know how Butch talks post-game/pre-game/etc. It is gag-worthy, annoying, and is always preparing excuses for the next loss. I want our next football coach to have the Rick Barnes mentality. Here are some of Barnes's comments after tonight's exhibition win 86-44:

All credit to:
Wes Rucker (@wesrucker247) on Twitter

On one of the best players and leading scorer for the game, Grant Williams: "He needs to know I’m not playing around. I want consistency. I want to know what I’m getting."

Other comments:

"I might decide right before every game who’s gonna start that night. I want consistency."

"These guys work for 40, 41 opportunities a year. They need to not waste a single one. They need to know what it takes to win."

"Jordan Bone was playing well, but then me made a bad play and had some attitude about it. So he didn’t play any more."

"I love these guys. I really do. I love ‘em. But I want more for ‘em. We’re not there yet."

I think it shows with the product on the court/field. Rick Barnes has a bunch of 3* players playing above their expectations, and Butch Jones has 4*/5* players looking like busts.

Consistency - a favorite word of both Butch and Barnes. :)

I think a lot of fans who don't pay attention are going to be surprised at how good the BasketVols are this season.

Should easily be a tourney team. IMO Without any serious injuries.

So in his time at UT he's had 1 top 100 player and you're good with that?

After inheriting a team that had it's 4th coach in 5 years, yes. He got players that were under the radar. The people who spout the Barnes doesn't recruit nonsense don't pay any attention to basketball.

Lol. I think CRB is a good coach and basketball mind I just question how high he can take us. The league is getting better.

Top 100 per 247 but not per their composite rankings.

I definitely agree with the OP's premise.
I have had to tune out Jones since his arrival to tolerate him.
Barnes actually sounds like a coach with expectations. But, I am underwhelmed by his recruiting and by the excuses being tossed around in this thread. I definitely don't view us as a tourney lock. We're 3*U. Even Barnes can only take us so far.

I think the jury is still out for his recruiting. I think what he inherited and the image of Tennessee basketball must be repaired before he can start recruiting 4*/5* players. I believe that will come with wins and with time. But absolutely if the recruiting doesn't improve, Barnes is to blame in the long run.

I do think Barnes is a good coach and he actually makes adjustments unlike Butch who will run the infallible system to fallibility. My only gripe is recruiting especially having to watch Bama and MSU get better

all take all the 3 stars we can get if they are as good as grant williams. all 3 stars are not created equally. some are rated 3 star because they might not have the measurables but are really good players. richardson was a 3 star player and is in the nba. what i like about barnes is his teams play hard and they get better. [player development] the last 2 years basketball has been more fun to watch than football although football was winning at a little higher level. this year football has been painful to watch so i look forward to basketball and hiring a new football coach.

Is it just me, or are sports announcers using the word "Resiliency" a lot more these days. Maybe I'm just weary of it...like "Unbelievable".

Rick Barnes is Nick Saban like. Hates compliments and will never publicly brag about his team.
TOTAL OPPOSITE OF BUTCH

There are going to be some shocked people by the time BBall season is over. People put too much stock in recruiting rankings because the don't know how they work. The main driver in rankings is who is recruiting the player. If Saban is after a kid he will automatically be a 4 or 5. UT's high ranking classes are the result of plucking players that are sought after by Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, etc. It is true that Saban is a good judge of talent and potential but the ranking services take their cues from the coaches not the other way around. So in the end the highest ranked players are the the highest ranked because they are recruited by the highest ranked schools.
Barnes is Good.

I thought the same thing. Barnes doesn't pull any punches, and post game is actually good listening to with insights, vs getting 1% better each and every day.

I also think that bball Vols have a chance to have huge upswing in support if they can post some good wins. VN is starving for a winner, and just think there's going to be a frenzy of support at TBA.

Maybe Butch can help him recruit. Barnes may have to leave his office though.

Jesus no. Barnes does much more with his 3 stars than jones does with his 5 stars. Keep Jones (for the next 3 weeks) as far away from the basketball complex as possible.
