Interesting. Can't imagine Gruden ever being in play for UF.

There has to be somebody else that's a wow hire that both schools could be after...

the names "possibly" being in play for both schools I could think of would be:

Mullen
Frost
Kiffin
Kelly
Gruden (doubtful he'd do florida though, doesn't mean they wouldn't try)

Good afternoon all. Been lurking on here for a week or so trying to figure this one out. Let me start by saying my wife works for UT. Will not say title, but pretty high up the ranks. She does deal with funding though, and has heard nothing. My question is if Gruden is our guy would it not make sense to finish the season with Jones and wait till NFL season is over. That way Gruden gets to finish season and we get our recruits? It is not a sprint if you want to build a dynasty.

We've been running a marathon for years... our legs are jello and our lungs are shot!!

We have a little time, but the new signing day in December is huge now for recruiting. Need to have a clear path well before then.

Looks like the dam might be starting to crack a bit. I may or may not know ATL but part of what he just said lines up with what I have been told. I am sure I will get crucified for posting a screen shot of a text (if I can figure out how) but this is a conversation I had last Friday from information that I was given verbally. The blue is mine the gray is the person I was sharing the info with.

My take on this.

The hesitation on letting Butch go is from Currie with an assist by Fulmer. Maybe in response to something Sexton said in buyout negotiations.

The contacting coach thing could be for the reasons Atlanta Vol mentioned but could also be because Currie was directed to find another candidate. This could be in order to remove the fan base as a lever in negotiations, provide a more pliable alternative (i.e. a coach that requires less control and doesn't require as many concessions on the Academic side), and/or to split the united boosters. It seems to be a desperate move because, if it backfires, the one orchestrating the change will get a huge amount of blowback.

Given the feedback in the last section, I think most of the players have aligned on a COA that will be met with fan approval.

Just my $0.02.

I could see this being the case. It would be irresponsible of them not to have a backup plan in place if Gruden falls through. That's how we ended up with Butch in the first place. The deal may be "done" in principle but until its announced publicly, things can still happen. If Haslam screws it up in the final hour, they need to know who the next person in line will be.

This is what worries me about people posting stuff like this. A "wow" hire is not someone you think has a lot of upside like frost or mullen. A "wow" hire is a mother-effing white whale that's gonna helicopter it in the faces of Georgia and florida. It's getting filet mignon, not sirloin. It's figuring out your wife has a dead relative worth millions and they left it to you, not 100k. It's going home with a 10 and not a 7.

I think some people who say this think "wow frost would be a good coach here, that is a wonderful hire." No. A wow hire is someone who is gonna come in and alter the college football landscape. Frost might win us games, but he's not going to immediately terrify rival schools fans when he takes the podium for the first time. Gruden does that. Let's not get it twisted.

Don't forget the VC angle. I know for a fact that the University has wanted to be a top research university for years and the 85% know this!

I did but I don't believe it. Big Jim didn't hire Lane Kiffin, that was Hamilton's guy from the start. He didn't hire Derek Dooley that was a rush hire from Hart. CBJ may have been his guy but to blame the total ineptness from the AD all on the Haslams is silly. He didn't hire Donny Tyndall or Holly Warlick either nor did he force Pearl to lie to the NCAA.

Bingo. Haslams may have big money and a voice in the AD, but they dont run anything. I dont even know how that nonsense rumor got started. Please offer one shred of evidence the Haslams make the decisons at UT AD?
