You are spot on... it is about passion. He is one of the most dedicated, driven, competitive individuals you would ever meet. I have sat close by him at arena league games watching his brother's team play. He was a blast. Heckling the refs, giving them the Chucky stare and could not sit still the entire game.
I worked for PWC in Tampa during the time frame that he was the Bucs coach. I passed One Buc Place every morning around 4:45 to 5:15am. His and Monte's vehicles were there most of the time. Would see Monte jogging around that time each day. Heard CJG speak a number of times, he talked about not having a life and sleeping on the couch in his office sometimes during the week of a big game to prepare.
Quick story and you most likely can find this on the web. After the Bucs went to play the regular season game against the Eagles during the Buc's Superbowl year. They lost with CJG's offense getting manhandled by the Eagles defense. On the bus/plane ride back CJG was breaking down film. Warren Sapp tells the story of CJG coming to him on the ride back, giving him a Chucky stare and a profanity laced statement saying,"I got them, I got those SOB's bitz packages and tendencies". He told Sapp, "you guys get us to the playoff and we meet the Eagles again, we got their ass". He was true to his word and the Bucs beat the Eagles in Philly to make the Super bowl.
I know, cool story bro.... but you take that passion and understand that with football, "Gruden is the smartest person in the room". That has the makings of a winning coach in my eyes and most anyone with any real knowledge of the game. This includes all of the NFL who would love to have him on the sidelines.
