If Nebraska is willing to do whatever it takes to get Frost then it won’t matter what Tennessee and Florida are willing to offer IMO.

I think we are in such a bad place that we should be willing to over spend to make sure we get a winner. We aren’t just hiring a coach this time. We are trying to stop the bleeding that has happened for over a decade. We’ve missed an entire generation of kids who should have grown up watching Tennessee football be great. The fan base is disenfranchised, our chief rival is on a legendary run, we are bottom feeders during an era of football with the most national exposure. We can not miss this hire. Especially if Florida hires someone like Taggart, Frost, etc.

That’s why I think we have to get one of the candidates with the least risk to say yes even if it means you over pay. Gruden, Patterson, etc. Guys who will win big and also change the narrative. In a way I feel like we are hiring a coach and paying for a narrative change.

Yep, if Nebraska comes, game over. Really discouraging

Nebraska announced an extension for Riley just a few months ago. Tennessee is a way better job as well. And I don’t see nebraska paying multiple buyouts and then overpaying Frost by a couple million.

There’s still a pretty good chance he lands somewhere other than Nebraska.

That was huge for him. I also think “can he recruit” is the most over blown question on here. I think any diligent and competent coach can get top shelf talent to the Hill. Tennessee recruits itself.

Butch was an exceptionally hard worker. That coupled with reaching out to the alumni Dooley intentionally alienated was huge in the beginning

Guy has my respect. Worked very hard and he almost had it here. So close to breaking through just couldn’t quite do it.

Gonna leave it better than he found it that’s for sure. Can’t say that for the 3 coaches who came before him.

How? Next coach will barely win 6 or 7 games with the badly coached or overrated roster Butch left.

Offensive line... bad
WR's... Slow and ineffective
QB's... Oh lord
DL... Disaster
LB's ... Awful, probably worst in the SEC
DB's... meh

This is a really bad team that Butch is leaving behind.

You think Butch's choices of Coordinators/Assistants sunk him or was it other areas?

I think his worst move was firing strength coach. Don’t think he ever recovered from that.

Definitely made some bad hires though. Especially this last go around.

The team is awful. The talent is not.

If Debord has stayed this team is 6-2 right now with a first time QB and returns almost everyone next year.

Thanks, they were so close in so many losses it made me wonder if better Coordinator/Assistant hire could have brought better results.

I can see where you're coming from on the strength coach.
What's your opinion of the current strength coach? Thanks

I think it was believing that his plan was infallible and not listening to people with other good ideas.

I've always had the opinion that his stubbornness was one of his major problems, especially his system. To me it appeared he was always trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Old cliche', but when I hear that term I automatically think of Butch.

If you're going to use the Butch system, why even recruit a pro style quarterback? Never made sense to me, but maybe it's just over my head.

At the end of the day the job was too big for him. I think it’s that simple. Tennessee is a big job in it of itself. Throw in how bad we were, throw in a decade of frustration, throw in the success of Bama, and throw in that his biggest school before Tennessee was WVU as a WR coach. We had an elementary school teacher trying to be a professor at Harvard.

Don’t have one. We still look weak though. Especially offensive line outside of trey.

Speaking of WVU, I know a guy here who is a notable booster there. He is also friends with Butch going back to his WVU days, and stays in contact with him.
He said he hadn't talked to him since the season started, but didn't look like he'd survive. Said he had a hard time letting people do what they're hired to do, and wanted to control everything. Said Holgerson was the same way, but has learned to let that go. Said he was that way at CMU and UC too.

Pretty much what we all agree upon
