Good morning! I wanted to quote something you wrote, but not your dissertation. Here are my thoughts on that:
-obviously, good, meticulous work. I'd expect no less.
-as I've said many times now. There are wildcards, but Gruden's not one of them. I can immediately dismiss any report about "He said no." It simply isn't true.
- talking about the war between boosters and admin. I don't think it is an accident that we get bad news at the same time each day. The admin side is attempting to do what the boosters have done with Bubba and MIT, except the admin is using people in the office with other stuff to do. MIT and bubba are watching everything we say. I believe they are hired professionals, in some way.
- the Haslam stuff reminds me why I don't want to be in politics. I don't want to need to scratch anyone's back. Ever.
-perhaps you are right that he caught wind of bev's decision on outsourcing. I'm hoping that yesterday evening's flurry of activity demonstrates that it is simply the first chip to be cashed in. I'm convinced that hubbs tweeted that because he was told to. I believe it really may have been the white smoke from the chimney.
- I know that the Haslams and the corkers are connected politically and personally, but I'm not sure that corker's presidential bid is a factor here. I just think the Haslam name can't be drug through the mud because of anyone's future in politics.
-PM adds value in so many ways. He is an instant unifier in any contentious negotiations. Plus, he is able to provide sweat equity that is of greater value than his monetary donations might be. Add to it that he is a scarabbean and his clout grows immeasurably.
-last night's message from the Beav really was a gift to me. I said yesterday that the Beav speaks to those that are here for hope, and bubba speaks to those that are here for the problem solving. But the Beav spoke to the problem solvers last night. What he was saying, really, is that the boosters have pocket aces for each hand of poker they are playing/each primary stakeholder. The AA cannot walk away from a deal that includes a VC firm in silicon valley funnelling research to a school that aims to be a top 30 public research university. As a graduate from the college of engineering, I appreciate that the boosters brought in this piece.
The boosters have quite literally thought of everything. This is why they are billionaires today.
I am not sure I agree with the political side of your theory. I do agree that perception is of the utmost importance to the Haslams, but I am not sure Corker cares. He is more consumed with the state of the country and the happenings in Washington ( I don't want to be "that guy" but I know this for a fact.)
Your last argument I agree with totally. I know that UT has wanted to become the research leader in the South for a long time. People I know, have been approached about donating to make that happen. It may well be that the folks Beav represents are like he says, something to the effect... "they don't miss".
The whole hired professionals thing is very interesting. A few of these "insiders" are routinely on and watching the thread, but they choose their time to drop their info.
Beav has gone from it is done, to we have more leverage we can use. I think this message board may be as much of a pawn in this game as some of the major players.
It has been fascinating watching everything unfold.
I am not one for details. I never read instructions. 99% of the time, I'll wing it and hope for the best. That's just who I am.
Thanks SFD, Hawk, and all the rest for decoding.
Does anyone have any info on the radio interview a high school coach supposedly gave in Florida yesterday? Supposedly he is a friend of Gruden's and said that he (Gruden) had told him that he wanted to coach in college as a "check off" item on life accomplishments or some such thing.
I'm still catching up in the other thread overnight, but, what if the hold up is and has been that we are switching back to the athletic department being autonomous and independent of the chancellor (as condition for Gruden to accept)? Thus, waiting on BOD meetings to do so?
I think this is a very real possibility, and this week's events will show us.
Enter the VC firm and the condition that might allow it to happen. Once the Athletic department is autonomous, the money is not discretionary and the academics have very little to no say on where and how it would be spent.
The VC money might be the one thing that would allow this move to happen.
You misunderstood what I was saying about corker. I don't think he is a factor in this.
I think beav's story has only changed in perception. When he started posting, the boosters had it all wrapped up. And the boosters were prepared to pull out all the stops to make it happen. These are ridiculously powerful men who know how to get what they want.
I'm quite fascinated that you can hire professionals to do this work.
Thank you for your insight and well thought out posts. It does appear that we get bad news every afternoon from someone connected to the admin/AD. And then it's countered with news in connection with boosters later on. You have also eased my mind a tiny bit regarding Haslam. I would think as well thought out as this appears to be, the boosters wouldn't not think of how to get him into the fold. And my opinion Beaver is the absolute real deal, not a troll as was posted yesterday.
Even if not funded, but, giving research opportunities would require some capital. It also allows for the University to get a piece of any profits that are generated from the research. So, maybe the funding isn't as great as the desired need or want, but, it would possibly allow the university to receive up to 50% of all monies generated from the opportunity provided if brought to fruition.
Needs are met, or are acceptable, but, the wants become exponentially above and beyond if the research is successful.
