Any coach that has NCAA baggage has to an extra level of scrutiny by the SEC commissioner. That's why Larry doesn't think Kelly will land in the SEC.

The commissioner would fall over himself to approve chip Kelly to coach in his league. He knows Saban is killing the SEC, Kelly would give someone a chance to compete against him and restore some balance.

I could see Currie waiting around to see what A&M is going to do with Sumlin. I'd hire him in a heartbeat if they let him go.

After his 11-2 year with Manziel he has gone 9-4, 8-5, 8-5, 8-5, and 5-3 currently. In his 4 years at Houston he had an 8-5 and 5-7 record to go with his two good ones. He has been pretty average for his career, especially considering how highly ranked his recruiting classes are.

Man we've been on the same page till that statement. Wow I couldn't disagree more. Even with all those high powered assistants and infinitely more talent than most teams, they can't get it done.

What does the board think of Taggart? Helped build two programs and is a bigtime recruiter in the South. I wonder if he would want to leave Oregon after a year however.

I believe he would listen and he would be very successful at UT.

It appears I'm alone on this one.

Much like with Dan Mullen at Mississippi State, I don't think much of the Texas A&M job and think a change of scenery would do him well.

Sumlin has everything he needs at A&M and still can’t win consistently. Why would we think he would do any better here? I would not be excited over that hire at all.

To hire Kelly, they’d have to get clearance from Sankey. Because of former ncaa baggage.

Exactly.

A new SEC legislation passed at the spring meetings earlier this year requires an extra layer for hiring a coach with prior NCAA issues. According to a document provided by the SEC, it says any coach “who has either engaged in unethical conduct or participated in activity that resulted in a major infraction” must have the school’s president or chancellor “consult with the commissioner” about the hiring. This essentially creates another layer of accountability and pause before bringing a coach into the league with NCAA issues.

I do agree with that. Texas AM has never been a great program. But now they move into the SEC and expect to be national title contenders. Sumlin would be a definite upgrade.

I don't necessarily agree with the emptyneyland movement, partly because of the players and partly because I think Jones is not our coach in 2018 regardless of what happens at this point. But I would love to send some similar kind of unified message to the UT admin that if this coaching hire doesn't go well, there will be a lot of empty seats in Neyland for years to come.

From what I gathered of today's practice reports it seems as if some of the players may have joined the #EmptyNeyland movement.

Question... If VN/ Twitter/ FB had existed in '92, what would have been the reaction to promoting the sitting OC to head coach? (I was in second grade, so i didn't have an opinion at the time)

I think I get your dig at me, but it is not a good one. We have over a decade of verifiable and incontrovertible evidence of malfeasance and stupidity regarding the running of UT atletics in general and football in particular...the program is in the crapper.

You can definitely make this argument in regards to certain boosters and BOT members who have been around for a long time.

But isn't this a bit of a false equivalency in regards to some of the new faces around for this coaching search?

Sure, Currie and Davenport may end up blowing this. They may already be blowing it. But to assume that they will based on the failures of Cheek, Hart, and Hamilton isn't exactly fair. Right now nobody here really knows what they're thinking/planning for sure.

If they blow it, I'll be right there with you in anger. Until then, why not just let it play out?
