I get why everyone wants Gruden, huge name, big splash, etc., etc. But the reality of hiring him is mind boggling to me. The rumor is he's been offered $10 mil a year, right? Okay, say he takes the job. Now we have a coach that's been out of coaching for almost a decade, and has had ZERO involvement in the college game for almost THREE DECADES. That means his entire coaching staff has to be extremely well versed at coaching, recruiting, AND the college rules and regulations. How much will it cost to fill out his staff with those coaches? Right now, CBJ has 11 postitions staffed. To bring the best of the best, which will be necessary with Gruden's lack of knowledge on the college game, we'd be looking at somewhere around another $10 mil per year. So now the university is on the hook for ~$20 mil per year, with ZERO guarantees of it being an upgrade.
Somebody tell me why this is better than say, Matt Campbell at ISU? He's knocked off 2 Top 5 opponents this year, which is 2 more than CBJ has done in 5 years.
Nothing is a guarantee. When you look at the elite coaches coaching NCAA football right now, none are coming to Tennessee. Bringing in an up and coming coach from a small school who's never been on a big stage or a Pruitt, coordinator type with no head coaching experience is a gamble. The "diamond in the rough" approach has bitten us multiple times now. At least with Gruden, you get a recognized name, ties to the area, super bowl winner, obviously a good x and o coach.
What it really boils down too is if the upper ups at Tennessee are as serious about winning as the fan base is. We have the facilities and the backing.
