Official Jon Gruden Thread XXV

Spoke to one of my guys in the AD this morning. If you remember I said that Butch would not coach USM and that came from a booster. That could still be in play but I would lean toward that being wrong. Whatever happened Sunday seems to have upset the apple cart. Now if you go back before that one of my AD guys said “we think it will be after bama”. Keep in mind that was opinion and things have been really tight. Oddly enough the guy I spoke to this morning called me last night and I missed the call. He left me a message to call him today. So that brings us up to said conversation this morning. We discussed things like empty Neyland which the general consensus is that is seen as a childish way to get attention. The reason being is that everyone involved knows exactly the pulse of the fan base. I also made the statement about John being a genius or inept to which he replied the former not the latter. Needless to say I asked about Butch being let go and people being afraid if somehow a miracle occurs has something changed that would allow him to stay. The answer was what is done is done. I asked about damaging TN by keeping him in place and Was told. It is far more damaging to remove a coach mid season and that lesson was learned with Phil. Another tid bit is that a lot of these guys come from fatherless homes and see Butch as a father figure like it or not it really hurts players regardless of what fans think. No further information was given and I did not press the issue I took it as what I have been told from the booster side he is done. We discussed multiple coaches and it was just two friends talking opinions. From that conversation I believe that no one is absolutely off the table. Now for all the cloak and dagger people it seems like information is starting to come out and I thought it interesting that I was contacted to “catch up”.

This sounds like legit info to me. Thanks! :good!:

I did. He’s as perplexed as everyone else. Says he doesn’t know what changed but something did. Thinks Butch must be working on something on his end Because as the buyout and contract modifications stood when he left it, Kentucky was it and there was no further compensation discussed of he stayed past then. So, his speciation at this point (and actually makes sense), he thinks Butch has found a new team and is working out something with them and for whatever reason Currie is leaving him in place until then. Which again kind of lines up with the “no suitable interim coach.....giving TN the best shot at a bowl...”, while Currie works on what’s next for TN.

Unfortunately, he’s not involved in the day to day ops and Is used as different counsel for other non-football issues, but was used for legal during the buyout modification and agreement (with others). So, his work was competed last week unless he’s brought back in. As of yet, the agreement stands as they left it last week.

Thanks Doc. This makes sense to me.

This university and AD are such a never ending ish show in every way imaginable. They couldn't seize a good opportunity if their life depended on it.

Support the players no matter what. If anything it would look good for UT that fans are still filling the stadium during dark times.

Honestly?

I've been firm on this not happening, for several reasons.

I've put many pieces of info together, including personal info I've gathered.

Long story short. As of today, I absolutely believe there is a "deal" and Gruden is on board.

I also believe it can get blown up with a flip of a switch.

I came in here for the fun, giggles and just to meet up with some of the old gang from 2012 coaching search... I started out just having fun and going along with the gag..... As I read more and more I have come to believe that you are correct here

Basilio saying that UT is doing absolutely nothing and Currie is just a patsy in the whole situation. Haslam is in total control and is doing nothing.

One thing i remember from 2012 is this thread would go off the rails when basilio was on the air. Always brought an influx of panic. By design because that’s how he gets ratings.

Growing rumors that if Butch gets to a bowl game, he gets one more year??? It’s on every board that is what Currie supposedly told him.

No way, right? I don’t see it.

IMHO it's not academia giving up power, it's about wanting more toys(lack of better word). academia and athletics neither will lose power nor gain. Player shift ? mmmm probably !

I can understand that. Giving up or selling power may not be the best description. But convincing them that allowing athletics to super succeed, will allow academia to have more toys, is what this drama is really about. I am just guessing. If academia is satisfied with the status quo, at the moment, then this "power struggle" is happening. So player shift would be appropriate. For some it's power, others MEH, some it is just football. After all, they are all people.

Swain at the end of his show said he got a tweet, I think he said tweet, from a person either deeply connected to the boosters or a booster himself that this empty neyland thing is going to jeopardize their chances of landing the next great coach at UT. I was thinking the same thing.

if that's true (and i'm not saying it isn't) then looks like currie would come out and say something about supporting the vols at homecoming ... he don't have to say why, or who, just something to stress we need support.

course, that's probably inflame the idiots who want to wear paper bags to the game in protest, or not go at all.

Thank you for this! We should all take a deep breath and let the man do his job!

100% agree....If ESPN was smart...why would they not come out and say in some crypic way that JG job is safe...

While I do agree, I see it as a natural progression. If you already have tickets and were planning to go to the game, don't boycott but go have a good time watching the sport. If you didn't have tickets and now don't want to go because the coach sucks, I don't blame you. I won't be making a very hard determined effort to take my family to the games anymore. Not because I don't love the Vols, but because the coach isn't very good and I don't like to spend a lot of money to be disappointed.

Blame Haslam if it does.

This. I hadn't thought about this until now, but this may be the most important part.
