Gruden makes $7M a year and works 3 days a week. Who in their right mind would take similar pay and work 3 times as much? That's right. No one. The fantasy that some of you have that he's going to be our coach is not healthy.

1) Man hasn't coached in 10 years
football has evolved since then.
Could he catch up? Yeah if he hires the right guys.
However, how are is intitutional control skills?

He hasn't had to lead even a poistion group, much less a team of young adults.

2) College process. Gruden having to recruit...after he's been a big time sportscaster is not going to happen. Recruiting is the lifeblood of a college program. He's too far removed from the type of mentality you need to have to recruit.

3) He's getting paid just as well as a bigtime college coach with 1/10th the stress. He's adding years to his life with this choice to stay in the broadcast booth.

There are better suited coaches out there for us to have. From a current knowledge standpoint and day to day more motivated to win in today's football game.

Pretty much EVERY coach in the SEC ACC BIG TEN are more qualified to coach Tennessee at this point than Jon Gruden. Including Butch Jones. And Butch Jones obviously needs to go himself...

Tennessee will hire a good coach.
Unfortunately so will Florida.

But as is stands now.. Butch is not even in the top 8 coaches in the conference. Tennessee is arguably the 2nd best program in the SEC historically. That's not a good match.

Butch will be fired. But Gruden would be even worse!
So let's keep our eyes up on REALITY and hope we can outbid some teams.

1) He has been following every trend in college and pro football to a painstaking detail in his down time along with being the face of MNF and dealing with every single up and coming NFL player drafted.

2) He can hire the staff to handle the recruiting grind. Do you actually think Fulmer, Jones, or any other head coach does the heavy lifting on recruiting by themselves?

3) Competitive warriors such as Gruden thrive on the stress while individuals such as Jones wither and turns red while tucking their arms.

4) Soon

Dude... He connects really well with young guys coming out of college. He holds a QB camp. Guys love him and he would excel at recruiting.

He's been around football and analyses it day in and out after winning a super bowl.

He would have to adjust to college rules and so on but some of your points are crazy.

My understanding is he is finishing out the terms of his departure.
Do to his buy out terms...

But have we truly thought of the children.
If Butch is let go, who’s going to tell Hyams, and Ainge, and Mike Griffinith.
Oh, the humanity and the joyless tears of agony.

Gruden would bring excitement to the program but we’re going to have to start living in reality.

Yes, he loves Tennessee and enjoys interacting with the players and coaches.

But that doesn’t mean he wants to coach here.

He’s been with ESPN for a long time and doesn’t have to deal with much responsibility. He’s making $$$ by doing less.

He loves Tennessee but not enough to where he wants to give up his commentary gig to come coach.

Thank you!

It's not healthy at all.

Good luck though!

Man alive...

Making this thread as a home for all those who think Jon Gruden:

1. Will never come to UT,
2. Would suck at recruiting,
3. Was an overrated NFL coach who only won a Super Bowl with someone else's team.

This is a safe place to vent all your anti-Grude opinions without being merged into the Official Gruden Thread and then being ridiculed and ostracized by true Grudenites!

Go! :)

No inside info or anything but an old man at a football game said he heard that part of Butch’s buyout would be a position with the Browns. It was an interesting thought that I haven’t saw brought up.

Unless you have a passion for coaching football and coaching TN because you bleed orange like the rest of us.

Then you would consider it.

It's not working if you love what you do. He loves the VOLS and football.
