Finebaum: "Butch Jones may be the worst game management coach I have ever seen"

Just now

The hyperbole is getting ridiculous. I'm guilty of it myself, but it's out of hand right now.

Butch isn't a total scrub of a coach (he's not good either, but he's not John L. Smith). He made some bad decisions that cost him his job. Decisions that were made 2-3 seasons ago and are just now catching up with him. If he was the worst game manager in FBS we would have 0 wins over UGA and 0 over UF. Probably 0 over South Carolina as well.

His bad decisions aren't Dooley "I didn't recruit an OL in 2012" bad, but bad enough that 2017 was going to be a rough year. Combine that with dropping two games you absolutely can't drop the year before and now he's on a scorching hot seat/essentially already fired.

I mean honestly, how many games do we win next year if we keep Butch? I’m thinking 7 tops. So we keep Butch only to fire him one year later? I just don’t see this program going up from here. He’s maxed his potential at UT imo

Not really directed at you, but really, why does anyone care what Finebuam says? Almost everything he says and does is to get attention. He's a sports shock jock.

Thanks for the link. Early on he also talks about how if Butch were to magically go 5-0 to finish Sexton would want to negotiate that mitigation clause out of the contract. There's no way Currie is going to do that.

So what we know for a fact is no matter how the rest of the games go, Butch will be finding another job.

What's the mitigation clause?

Don't see anything beyond someone saying something may come out soon no details then people throw out random names.... crowder is gross so I have no sympathy if he got punched at this point

I hope he did get punched. I'd add it to one of the little things CBJ did right in his time here.

He's well below average from a game management standpoint at this level IMO.

Well, he may not be great, but I would pegs his bigger problems were strategic in 1) not bringing in a competent OC this year, 2) firing his longtime strength coach, and 3) not having the courage to tell entitled former 5-stars to kick rocks if they're not willing to work.

If he hadn't make those errors, we'd be all tolerating his Butchisms because we'd have competitive teams.

Peyton is the wildcard in all this. He's retired and will be watching the Vols closely on Saturdays now. He doesn't want to suffer through another 5 years of a little dick coach.
