It's a lot easier to win three basketball games (play-in game, 6-seed and 14-seed) with three NBA players on your team than it is to do whatever you're saying Butch should have done.

I’m drawing a blank here. Who was the third NBA player? Richardson, stokes, and who?

But you can start the process once you fire him. If we don't even start the process till December, no way we have a coach in place in time for signing day.

I just mean you don't have to fire him right now.

In a perfect world, you fire him after LSU (because that's a definite loss) and that gives two-ish weeks get everything done. Then you announce your new coach the Monday after the final game.

I don't think we'll win this Saturday and he'll be fired, but in a perfect world he wins the next two and then it goes the way I posted above.

Sorry, not buying that. I think you only have to look a couple of years back to see an example of a completely toxic situation not only not hampering a team, but potentially spurring it to success. The Bruce Pearl petition was one of the more surreal, absurd moments in my time as a UT fan. It was a national story, and really did create a tough environment for Cuonzo (who was no great coach, but didn't deserve that). Did that toxicity manifest itself in more losses? Nope, an underachieving team went to the Sweet 16. Whether it was through a bunker mentality or CCM's coaching, the season didn't tank. So no, I don't think the "fans and the media" are responsible for the losses based on toxicity. I think that's an excuse from people dying to still make some excuses for Butch.

Re: Butch doing a lot of things well...what's on that list these days?

The Cuonzo petition is not close to the same thing.

Fans supported Cuonzo and put 15k plus in the stands consistently for him for 2.5 years. The petition wasn't toxic. Fans had finally given up on him and were already moving on to the next coach. The petition lit a fire under that team and they FINALLY played like they were capable. The equivalent would be if we started a "hire Gruden" petition tomorrow and the team finished 8-4 and CBJ found another job next season.

Cuonzo Martin did not deal with what CBJ has dealt with in the media. Not even close. Big reason is that it isn't as big time of a job as football. Lots of it from CBJ own doing but much of it unnecessary and a big chunk of the media in this town is a detriment to this program along with the lunatic fringe mob known as Vol Twitter who live to make fun of their own program.

The petition had little to do with cuonzo and a lot to do with Pearl.

Yeah, Cuonzo was already getting fired in most fans minds. We had all moved on.

Miraculous run led to a play in game and a great draw in the tourney. That team made the elite 8 and they had one good win all year and it was against Virginia who at the time wasn't worth a crap and had just lost to a directional school.

You mocked me for suggesting that Mays opened his recruitment to make a statement about CBJ

I believe Atlanta Vol is a legit human being who gave some money to someone.

I don't buy everything he says and I don't buy that Mayes dad pulled a power move by opening up his recruitment as a thread to the UTAD to fire CBJ. They opened their recruitment to cover themselves because it was unstable.

Smart AD's do not fire a coach until they have their new coach locked down. See what kind of trouble LSU had last year and we had when we fired Fulmer without a replacement.
Patience

When UT fired Battle they had Majors
When UT fired Majors they had Fulmer
When UT fired Fulmer they had ... oh no

I used to be against hiring Gruden based on my feelings about him from my Tampa Bay days, but I changed my feelings because I believe he is the one hire that could almost completely unify and energize our fractured fanbase, nobody else available could. We need that as a group.

Fulmer was similar to an Ed O situation

That is what I am saying. They did not have anyone locked up. And ended up with Kiffin. It is dumb to fire coach until you have your replacement locked up. Unless current coach is fired with cause.

I think kiffin was already lined up when we popped Fulmer.

I meant Fulmer took over halfway through the season and then became the HC

Was going to say this. We didn't have a replacement for Kiffin for obvious reasons. I think Hart thought he had Gundy when he fired Dooley.

I do agree that you *should* have a replacement in pocket when you make a change. However, sometimes a change needs to be made regardless of who you can hire. That was the case with Dooley and appears to be the case with Butch.

Fulmer was interim HC for first part of season and Majors returned after heart surgery. Majors was then let go and finished regular season then Fulmer was named HC and coached bowl game.
