Recruiting Discussion

From Grant Ramey on the free board."Was told they played well and Davidson was a good test. Vols won by 14, but I’m not sure how much that score reflects a true 40 mins of basketball vs. the situational scrimmage work they do:

Proud of Barnes in this recruitment. Whether we land the kid or not, he's pulled out all the stops.

Personally, I think Currie has lit a fire under him but regardless I feel like he is out shaking trees now in recruiting. That's a positive step.

JMO but it seems like CRB has tried to pick up kids to build a solid foundation for our team. Having a 5 star or highly rated 4 stars players without a team of supporting role players really is a waste. CBP built his team the same way. Give me a team with role players like williams and fulkerson, then a 5 star will make a much bigger impact.

That said, IMO CRB finally has a team that allows him to focus on 5 star type players without sacrificing depth or skilled role players.

Which I believe has been Rick's plan all along. Our coach knows what he's doing and has us moving quickly into a position to become a force in the SEC and nationally.

I don’t think we need 5* players. I don’t think that’s Tennessee’s path to success. It’s not sustainable. But I don’t think we can reach our peak with a team of 10+ unranked 3* guys.

5 star guys have that natural ability to just be successful. With a few bust because of attitude. But with the right coaching a 3 star guy can be much better than his ranking. With the right attitude. I don't worry about stars. I worry about the players body language. His work ethic. His willingness to get better and not just settle. The NBA is full of guys that put in that work ethic. And many many 5 star guys getting paid to do whatever because they were bust. I trust CRB to put a solid team on the floor this season. Recruiting is way over rated if your a star watcher.

This. Barnes has built the base, balanced out the classes, and created a strong foundational blend or underrated talent, leadership, and depth. Now it is time to start landing some higher tier, impact talent to mix in with those guys. 2018 only allows for one scholarship, and it's a shame to have missed on Petrusev, but 2019 is already off to a nice start, and hopefully he builds on that.

VQ says Tennessee is going to try and get involved with 5*'s Anfernee Simmons and EJ Montgomery with Petrusev electing to head to Gonzaga. Fwiw I have heard Simmons is Florida bound since his Louisville decommitment, Montgomery however has seemingly been pretty quiet and has said he's open to all schools. I would personally prefer Montgomery given our roster makeup, I think adding another 6'10"+ guy would be more beneficial than a wing, especially if Pons develops as we hope.

Anfernee Simons, IMG Academy, Shooting Guard

E.J. Montgomery, Wheeler, Power Forward

Either one would be great grabs

I wouldn't get my hopes up for either but nice to see the staff isn't settling after missing on Petrusev, clearly they're looking for a high level player to fill that scholarship spot with.

Very encouraging. Me personally I’d rather get a freshman than a transfer. But if the right guy comes along like Daniel, I wouldn’t be opposed.

Imo should have been pushing them before now. Have to recruit a little more aggressively and worry about scholarship limits later

We waited until they decomitted or waited till we lost to gonzaga?

I don't know the exact time and date they contacted these guys, sorry Bruin. The two events were pretty close to each other though so I don't see much difference either way, point was they weren't recruiting these guys 6 months ago for a reason.

Does it really matter considering all those events happened within a couple weeks of each other?

Tennessee offered Simins a while ago, but he committed to Louisville and we moved on and focused in on Petrusev. With only one scholarship available, it doesn't make a lot of sense to cast a wide net. Plus, until Gonzaga made Petrusev a priority in the last couple weeks, we thought we had him.

It all boils down to making a player feel wanted imo. If you wait until you are told no from plan A it makes plan B feel less wanted imo.

Yes I agree we don't know the timelines here but t seems we waiting to we lost out on plan A

You also risk the chance of pissing off plan A before he makes his decision. And again, there was no plan B until a few weeks ago.

It seems like Simons was plan A all along being that we offered him first. He chose Louisville and we moved on to Petrusev.

Maybe but that's why coaches shouldn't mention scholarship spots. Just recruit and let the numbers work out IMO especially with how many transfers there are from Rick Barnes programs.

Bruin would be the same guy who if we were pushing hard for 5 guys and all 5 said they didn't like how Barnes was recruiting spots he didn't have would be bashing Barnes for it...comical.
