If we hire Dan Mullen, get ready in year two for Butch 2.0. I said yesterday, if he is so good, why hasn't someone else scooped him up yet? Exactly.
Just because he changes his zip code doesn't mean he will be able to recruit or coach at a higher level than he already is...
Typical UT, every other program will do what is necessary, and we will settle once again. Another dud will equal mediocrity for the next 10 years. No winning the east and certainly no SEC championships.... just year after year of getting beat by FL, GA, and AL and heading to a mid-tier bowl. Stop, repeat, Stop, repeat... Vanilla boring blah.

Changing his zipcode to UT over MSU would absolutely make him recruit at a higher level. Have you seen MSU?

Also, Mullen just took a less talented then UT team to Lexington and knocked the snot out of UK. Watch what we do there next week. Mullen does more with less. Imagine what he could do with more. He isnt' my first choice but I would still be happy to get him.

We could certainly do worse than Dan Mullen. I am ok with it if he is the backup plan. He knows the conference and has coached in big games. He would have better talent at his disposal at UT. He may not win an SEC title, but he would have us playing and winning the East every couple of years.

I do know that MSU fans have gotten a little impatient with him keeping his OL coach, who is a longtime friend. They have wanted a change with that position.

Also, Mullen hasn't left because his wife apparently loves it in Starkville. At some point though, you have to realize that you can't win anything of significance at MSU.

I would take him as plan C, but that is kind of my point... this Fanbase cannot take another average/above average coach and hope they take the program to the next level. We need a home run, not another single or double like we've settled for the last 9 years.... The Admin at this point is showing no signs that it cares to move upward. Hopefully there are big things going on behind the scenes as some have hinted, and that we have serious money this time to throw, but at this point I don't believe a word of it until it happens. The fact that Butch is still the coach and there's not an interim at this point, just reinforces the suspicion they aren't in any hurry and don't care. I'm not buying the whole negotiation of the buyout behind the scenes and what if he makes a bowl and gets $100,000 bonus... there is no benefit to the team and recruiting at this point to justify keeping him.

Have you ever been to Starkville?

Not sure if this has been posted but Dennis Dodd reported last night that Scott Frost is planning to go to Nebraska if offered.

Would be interesting to understand how the question was posed to Frost. Most coaches would plan to go if it was a major step up in terms of salary and prestige. If Vols offer, he may opt for us. Tough to go home and be a success. IMO

So what you are saying is kids would come to UT just for the location and not the coach... otherwise he'd be recruiting at a higher level there because of his coaching skills...
"oh, we won't come play for YOU at MSU, but we will come play for YOU at UT cause it's nicer." SMH

You have to understand the current landscape of college coaching. Our AD could have $6-$7 million per year at his disposal but still may not reasonably get a "home run" hire. The best bet is with someone who is currently not in coaching. Gary Patterson and Chris Petersen currently make close to $5 million (and maybe more with bonuses). They aren't going to jump for an extra million when they are in a stable and comfortable position. UT fans will expect immediate results.

You either have to pay a someone who is not currently coaching or give a raise to a lower level P5 or G5 coach. Dan Mullen is about the only reasonably successful P5 coach that is available unless you go with a Sumlin or Malzahn who may want a change of scenery.

Blocks?

Hmmmm. I wonder if How a defensive player blocks is considered to be a "football skill" when there isn't a TO?

It was no different than a block in the back. There was nothing violent or egregious about it. Under no circumstance should DB get fined just because the refs failed to throw the flag there.

Look guys, not trying to get into an argument about Mullen--- Just want us to continue to go after the best possible option and not start settling for second tier already... Several weeks ago we were talking about Kelly, Patterson, Gruden, Frost, etc... now we are talking about Mullen and Campbell.... All while Butch is still walking around bumping into walls trying to get leadership reps as the caretaker of UT football....

Don't know how you fail to understand this :lolabove:

Kids don't want to go to MSU. Period. Its like Vandy of the SEC West.

Dude, I live in Starkville. It's out in the middle of nowhere, and can't touch Tennessee in regards to stuff-to-do and facilities.

I don't have the time right now to do it, but it's pretty clear that Mullen is punching above his weight with the talent on hand. There's pretty good high school football in this state, but it's split between Ole Miss and MSU with Bama, Auburn, and LSU within driving distance that raid the top recruits. It's a hell of a lot harder to win down here than UT.

Do you understand recruiting? Location, coach, and facilities are all considerations for kids. UT now has access to much better talent that is closer to campus. It's not that difficult to understand.

First off why would you not want the (widely accepted) second best coach in the SEC. Also why is Frost in a teir above Mullen?

As I said, I understand and get this, but reading this board over the last 24hrs it looks like everyone is wanting to already settle for less and we DESERVE more for the program, the players, and the fansbase...

If a job opened up at UT, the sonic boom you'd hear would be the sound of me packing up my sh!t and hitting the road from Starkville to K-Town if I got that job.

I would imagine there were kids they wanted and felt they had a reasonable shot to get, but the fact MSU is in Starkville seriously hampered their chances.

No one is settling. People just have different opinions.

But, you have to be realistic. Chip Kelly, Gary Patterson, and Chris Petersen are not going to be our new coach.

I agree--- slide back up and read my response--- i don't want to all of a sudden start settling for less right off the bat....

And this from a poster on VQ...Still in Gruden's court...Lots of misinformation flying around the last few days. Reminds me a lot of the Harbaugh hiring at UM. It's still in JG's court and we have done enough to make this happen. It's now a matter of personal preference. First hand knowledge via somebody who will be on his staff if this happens. Flame away ... just sharing for those who care to hear it.

I shared that yesterday from a poster on VQ. Lots of questioning him on VQ so he explained his buddy is a coach at a D1 school and was contacted by Gruden to be on his staff at UT and he shared the text screenshot, TIFWIW...
