Fulmer was actually let go before Wyoming; the team was in turmoil over the firing and that precipitated the loss to Wyoming. If UT hadn't fired Fulmer, we almost certainly would have made a bowl and the team could have rebounded the next year.

In hindsight, UT could have benefited by giving Fulmer another year and harmed the program by keeping Dooley a year too long. UTAD was too impulsive in one scenario and too indecisive in the other. Currie certainly isn't being impulsive.

Wish we made the right hire in December 2008.

Anyone that was surprised Butch is still around wasn’t listening and had false expectations.

This AD won’t operate like that.

He could lose to Kentucky and still coach the week after.

This AD has a plan and he is executing it.

It isn’t on your timetable or with knee-jerk reactions.

Doeren*

Doeren is 2-9 vs ranked opponents at NC State in 3 years. Both of those wins have come against opponents (FSU and Louisville) who are now out of the top 25 and have lost at least 3 games a piece. FSU has lost 4.

I like him overall, but I don't think he can win consistently in the SEC and he shouldn't even get a look.

Edit* He has two big games coming up. We will know a lot more about him after those.

South Carolina beat him this year. Do not want.

It's not even the fact Butch is still here it's the no communication at all that has everyone all in a fuss.

Here is a scenario I want you all to think about that I feel 100% confident will play out.

Peyton is out there behind the scenes talking to people trying to find our next coach believing his input and expertise will be held into high regard.

Meanwhile, Big Jim is doing is own search.

It’s very conceivable they burn a bridge with Peyton on this deal.

Doug Matthews has eluded to the fact we aren’t getting a “big time” program changing for the better hire.

That's fine. Doesn't mean it's not stupid.

They're going to sacrifice bowl eligibility just to avoid the scuffle of making a change.

It does not affect money or how soon you have to hire a new coach. All it affects is the product on the field.

I've never heard that about Fulmer.

Hindsight is 20/20 and, at the time, we were still a program that was expected to be a serious annual player for the SEC. Fulmer had slipped in recent years and it was obvious that the new kids on the block at UF and Bama were outclassing him, on and off the field. It didn't help matters that they were also our two biggest rivals.

FWIW, I think they made the right decision. I also think that Kiffin was the right hire. It was just the perfect storm, with USC, that ultimately resulted in :banghead2::banghead2: Derek Dooley becoming our head coach.

As for Butch, it's not impulse to fire him, it's common sense. He's lost the team. He's made horrendous hires with Scott and Beard, or he's kept such control over their respective positions that he's set them up for failure. Either way, he's responsible and should be shown the door.

Exactly the very fact that lws and others say gruden turned us down is just evidence that butch is in fact done. Lame duck dead man walking done. He is obligated to come to work unless he quits or gets fired. Nothing else to see.

From Callahan: Butch Jones says he has not thought about changing play-callers. He said the #Vols' offensive issues are "an execution-type deal."

Lol

I get it and it makes sense usually. But this O has scored nothing and we still have an OC and HC who are leading it. If they bring him back, it will show IMO that we will be a horrible offensive team for a very long time. It is not a knee-jerk to expect an offensive TD perhaps once a game. If we were losing but competing then I could see how you could live with it and improve. But, just like Dooley, we are getting our doors blown off against the good teams and losing to comparable ones. We beat UMASS but they are not comparable. We are hearing Hyams mentioning they may keep him another year and he said they will just take a hit in reduced donations and lack of butts in the seats. Tells me they really don't give a damn.

I'm with you 100% until bold quote. I don't think Currie has any type of plan is a shameless puppet for Jim.

SBV, I respect your opinion. But I've had enough of this bullsh!t excuse that it's a knee-jerk reaction to fire a coach who is overseeing a TD deficiency that goes back to the UMASS game.

I get that they have a plan, that's fine, but this is cutting off your nose to spite your face.
