Anybody that thought Jones was going to actually get it done here wasnt paying attention to his time as a BearCat. I posted this back in Dec 2012 shortly after he was announced.
After watching the Jones press conference, my deja vu feeling of nausea at the coach speak sent me out surfing multiple Bearcat boards and I found common themes concerning the new head coach.
Micro manager
Weak x's and o's guy
Paranoid
Bad late game management
No 2nd half adjustment
On field loyalty to less talented players
Big ego
Corny Butchisms
Unwillingness to adjust his way to current roster skill set
Fans more upset over loss of assistant coaches than head coach
The bammer and gator have gifted the Vols with Dooley 2.0 for a long term stretch. The only good things I could find were he works really, really hard and appears to be a recruiting upgrade over Doolz.
I avoided the obviously butthurt fans in reading statements concerning Jones, but most Bearcat fans think he is way out of his league in trying to coach in the SEC.
Ugh!!!!! Do I think Jones can win the SEC and a NC? No, but I hope I'm wrong.
Hopefully the new AD gets it right this time.....
His info is interesting to say the least. Im not sure if hes legit or not. We will see. Im waiting to see the Vegas odds drop to +500 on Gruden at some point this week, which is another prediction he said would happen.
Firing Jones and replacing with an interim, things to consider:
- could it lead to academic causalities as players blow off class;
- assistants would spend more time looking for next job than game planning
- perception that AD does not have the coaches back (not true give this is year 5 but a mid year firing does raise the ?)
Given the report the assistants have not meshed, the above could be considered why Currie has not taken action(imo). I do believe if UK wins, then he is gone.
I dont think theres any doubt that Butch Jones will be fired at some point, Finebaum said when asked to comment on his alma mater. Now when is that time? Theres a lot of speculation that the university is waiting because of a clause in that contract that means they would pay him less money if he is ineligible to go to a bowl game. But from my standpoint that is ridiculous. He is a failed football coach. The team clearly gives it up and they go in the tank. Theres no philosophy, direction, definition or character when you watch this team play, and I think he probably shouldve been fired [Sunday] to end the suspense. I dont think its fair to football players who still have five games left to have to deal with this cloud, to have to deal with a coach that everyone knows will not be there.
On the other side of that, if the administration at Tennessee believes that Butch Jones can run the table and be an 8-4 coach, then all the power to them. As an alum, I find that to be utterly absurd. As a commentator, I find it to be ridiculous because hes an average coach who can recruit a little above his pay grade. But at Tennessee, when you look at the record, he has simply failed to do what he was hired to do, and that was to get Tennessee to the SEC Championship Game. I mean, hes 0-4 and were five years in. Im as perplexed as any person in your listening audience.
Have seen lots of stuff on Twitter/talk radio this morning about Jones' contract going down if Tennessee misses a bowl game. Have combed through his deal several times now and have not seen anything on that. Perhaps I'm missing an amendment, but was told I have the up-to-date deal.
Jones would miss out on a six-figure bonus if Tennessee doesn't make a bowl game, but based on the contract I have, it would not affect the buyout.
Morris is still a little too green for me.
I could sell myself on Campbell especially if he can pull out another upset down the stretch.
