It's been rumored that Peyton has been working with the Browns. Implications are that he may be the general manager of the Browns. If that's the case, he may very well be recruiting him to the Browns.

Even if true, it could have gone down like this:
Haslam/Peyton: coach the Vols?
JG: No.
Haslam/Peyton: ok, how bout the Browns?
JG: Maybe.

I'm not as sure about that this time. I've bled orange since I was a young kid, spent a lot of hard earned money on Tennessee football, invested an unmeasurable amount of time into this football program, so on and so forth. I'll always be a Tennessee fan, but if they hire some Wikipedia special again I'll be over it from a time and money standpoint. I think a lot of people will be that way. At least I hope so.

i agree... if this were us getting rid of Dooley, then I could see the fanbase coming back to see what was in store for the program. We have now endured almost 9 years of this crap and I know a bunch of folks that are done if we hire another dud. And the longer it takes, the more fans are departing...

Looks like CBJ is going to hang around and not resign. Even Dooley wasn't heckled on an aerial banner and cupcakes. Butch and Barb have probably talked it over and decided to keep their eye on the prize-- which obviously wasn't an SECE championship.

His whole demeanor has changed. He hasn't been nearly as upset as he used to get-- on the sideline or post-game. Even Barb's stopped the chip dip.

I agree, I think he's dug in. He realizes he's not getting a decent job so he may as well get as much as he can. I'm sure Sexton is encouraging him to hang tight.

Thats why I said it will never change unless Neyland is consistantly empty. I know im pretty well fed up with it and I get the feeling that most on here are as well.

Some smoke around Matt Campbell being high on Currie's list

He has proven that he can win games with inferior talent. Sign of good coaching.

I wouldn't be thrilled by any stretch of the imagination, but it would be a whole lot better than some of the names I've seen thrown around.

Bleak. Done my best to find the positives too. It's a strange feeling. I mean really, do we win out? Has CBJ been saving offensive wrinkles for Kentucky?

I know hind site is 20/20 but Butch should have never been hired. He was in no way qualified to be the coach at the University of Tennessee.
I hate to defend butch, but I'm gonna have to disagree with you there. Unless you think Tennessee should never hire a G5 coach, he had a pretty good resume including multiple conference championships at two different G5 levels.

All we have heard is how much different everything will be under Currie.

Well, to quote Jakob Dylan: the only difference that I see, is that it's exactly the same as it used to be.

The fans are so divided when it comes to realistic candidates

I would flip for Frost, others would hate it.

Bring me Mullen, and I yawn, but others would be thrilled

No matter what... folks gon be upset

They may not be waiting for UT though. Its not always as easy as "just hire them". They have to want the job.

The big problem is how do any of us know who has been contacted? Its possible that Currie hasnt, or has no plans to talk to any big name coaches.

Also, money talks more than anything. While a coach may not initially want the job, money can usually sway people.

I don't think any of those were out right championships? And no, I don't think Tennessee should be a proving ground for up and coming coaches. I realize sometimes you have to go that route but they should be more proven than Butch Jones. They should jump off the page. Butch certainly didn't jump off the page. It would have been better for his career to have went on to Colorado State.

There are guys out there that would unite the fanbase. We won't target them.

Lol at gruden going to the browns, he would come here first and he isnt coming here.

Pretty sure the buyout is set for the whole season, so that first part isn't right. If I remember right it does drop by missing a bowl though, so maybe that's what they're shooting for. I'm sure they'll lose more money in ticket/concession/merchandise by doing that though. Also that eliminates the chance of a new coach getting to spend some extra time with the team during bowl practices.

There's really no way to justify keeping him around for another game, financially or otherwise.

This is what I've got:

The original contract language was $2m for every year remaining on his contract with proration for any partial contract year. In 2015 when he got a raise the buyout amount went to $2.5m per contract year and I assume the proration language was retained. His buyout essentially drops by $208,333.33 every month. That's how I read the contract and the report from the TFP on the change in buyout amount.

The contract runs through Feb 28, 2021 as per the 2-yr extension agreed to in 2014.

I just see a bunch of other 2012 Butch Jones's. None of those little guys are SEC quality hc, but let's go ahead and get it over with. First, a little guy will be named coach and then everyone will begin hyping up how awesome he will be. Like the next Tom Herman, etc. We'll close at about 23rd in recruiting and next year's record will be 7-5. It's ok, it's year 0, right. Then we get another recruiting class around the 15 to 19th range. Year two is where the rubber meets the road. Here we'll either make the big step up to 9-10 wins or stay about the same. If we stay the same, we're stuck in another decade of football hell.

Agree 100% here. We just have to hope that some of the rumors that involve big names will pan out.

This contradicts LA Vol. Wonder which is correct.

I understand but who else do we hire. No one wanted it and perhaps no one will again.

I don't know. Like I said, it's easy to look back and see it now, but also, many of us were scratching our heads at the time. The signs were there early on. I think I remember reading the search firm that was hired recommended that we didn't hire Butch.

Agree... best known available considering the circumstances last time (turned downs)

A lot of the names might be the same, but I think UT is looking at it from a different perspective-- proven top-tier candidates that we'll pay a premium for, sitting P5 HCs that we can offer more than they're getting at their current schools (not just money, but other advantages and perks) and G5 up-and-comers that we would expect to command market value.

After you get past the top-tier, UT's going to evaluate it differently.

If Peyton becomes the GM as has been speculated, I could see it. If Gruden's going to coach again, it's gotta happen soon. His clock is ticking.
