Butch has to be done

Any reasonable and objective football fan would think so. But I guess our AD is holding out hope he wins out and they don’t have to fire him. They must like all the drama and hotseat talk from this past offseason and think that continuing that for another year would be a net positive for the program.

They can fire Butch and hire Belichick and he would still need years to replace this talentless team of softies. Other than Trey Smith and John Kelly, this team is hopeless.

UT job is 100% a rebuilding job because Butch burned this mf'er to the ground.

I think this job is a harder sell for Currie than a lot of you guys think

I tend to think we are but I hope we don’t overpay if we get an up and comer. We should plan as though we will be firing them in 3-4 years and not have too much money tied up in them.

I'm at the point where I'm done if they don't manage a name. We spend too much time and money while we see Bama et al go out and get their guy. I'll always love UT but I'm sick of this 3 to 5 yr cycle. We're better off getting a real coach.

Heard from a guy who was spot on regarding the suspensions, the initial QB starter, and OL situation/starters and he's saying Gruden will be our coach. He gets his info from legit sources so there's that. I. WANT. TO. BELIEVE.

Regardless, I think Currie knows this fanbase won't settle for yet another up and comer (and yes I know Scott is good and would make a great hire). I just think we're swinging for the fences and boosters are finally ready to support and pony up for a real coach.

At least I desperately hope so. And FWIW, I was never on the Gruden train last go round and don't dare believe we'll get him this go either. BUT I finally believe we're willing to pay.

Some things I've been thinking about:

If Gruden was going to be our coach I don't believe there is any way we could know that at the moment. In essence, I think it would be illegal. NCAA illegal for starters. I don't think he would be allowed to remain on MNF if it was reported he was going to be the next HC at Tennessee. He would have to step down immediately and shucks we haven't even fired Butch yet. Jeez. I think state law may require a job posting and other considerations before a public institution can fill a position like this - more illegal stuff to worry about.

One day the insiders are saying Gruden is the only guy we are going after right now and then literally the very next day he's out and a whole lot of other names are out there. Really? That fast? Okay.

He turned us down twice. Hmmm... When Mal Moore flew to Miami to hire Saban he told the pilot if I come back and Nick Saban is not with me take off without me. It's pretty easy to get someone like that to say no - it's much more difficult to get them to say yes but if that's the mission you either go all in or you fail. Simple, really.

We reportedly offered full control and a base of $7.5m. Btw, that was my number from the last thread. We also offerred a nice pkg for his staff. I'm wondering how we dealt with his endorsements and speakers fees because he has significant income from those revenue streams too. I think you need an NCAA waiver if you are a coach and earning outside income.

I've repeatedly said I think there's a 10% chance of us landing Gruden and I enjoy reading the latest gossip but like everyone else I'll remain in a wait and see mode. In the end, regardless of the spin from any side, if we get back on the plane and Gruden isn't with us, it will not be because Gruden said no; it will be because we failed to get him to say yes. jmo.

For me in this moment the thing I'm most reminded of is that loose lips sink ships. jmo.

Can anyone confirm that Currie wore brown shoes with a black suit to the game? That's what it looked like to me.

If so, i have literally no confidence in his judgment.

My apathy continues to grow. If Butch loses another and isn’t fired, that tells me UTAD doesn’t care. And then if we hire Mike Bobo or another up and comer, I’m cancelling my Volnation account and just checking in to the team for the preseason mags and on Saturdays in the fall (which would be a healthier way to follow anyway).

The “AD doesn’t care” narrative is tired.

That may be true, but there is scant evidence that would demonstrate the AD and univ. in general have any desire to truly compete for nattys. It comes down to spending. Alabubba is willing to do it. UT is not.

Concur. If we don’t spend big on this next hire we seriously need to drop the Bama rivalry. Hoping Saban retires and that Bama blows the next hire so our guy can beat them isn’t a real strategy.

The time for that statement is after a clearly bad hire is made, or if Butch were to be retained

Right now, there are way to many moving parts to paint with such a broad brush

Agree to disagree. The defense play great until they get gassed.

Guarantano is a tough guy. You can build on that . He has the tools.

Offensive playcalling is atrocious- New OC
Offensive line - New Line coach
Wide receivers- New WR coach
Running Backs - Great coach hard to look good when Oline and WR suck.

Butch hires assistants they stink.

Butch hires Rock . Legendary strength and conditioning coach. Cuts him off at the knees and lets the players do their thing.

Butch reportedly gives players the runaround. They don't trust him . Hard to go to war with a leader you don't trust.

Get a fire breathing Coach (Frost) to come in and get this team fired up about playing football again.

More so than just on the HC. Bama spends a fortune on analysts. Their football organization is massive compared to ours. We need that extra dozen eyes breaking everything down from recruiting to advanced scouting to self scouting. That's a huge advantage for them.

They may not be waiting for UT though. Its not always as easy as "just hire them". They have to want the job.

People don’t get that

The last 4 major programs I can think of that just went out and got their # 1

Bama
Michigan
Texas - Herman
Ohio State

I’m certain there are more, but when you are talking about the college football elite, it’s harder and harder. Sometimes, they simply don’t want to be here. Uprooting your family when you have security to throw yourself into an insecure situation is not always the most favorite thing to do

One puzzling thing is that in the old days, UT coaches were measured according to how they did against Bama, Florida and Georgia. It’s safe to say we were totally embarrassed by all three this year, and Butch has a bad record against them all (despite a few fun wins)

Yet despite all that, he likely will not be fired. Instead we are going to measure him by how he performs against the scrubs on the back end of our schedule. I think that’s telling of how our AD measures our program now.

Literally no other program in CFB operates like Bama does. The state government is even involved in the machine. There is nothing like it

Change is coming...

Looking at the Defense:

Our defensive line play is bad. Kongbo is below average. The DTs are meh at best. No real depth to speak of. No pressure in 4 man rush situations. Can't win big in this league without elite Dline play.

LBs are all over the field making plays. Sapp looks really good. He and Bituli could be elite. Jumper plays his heart out and knows where to be but is just a step or two slow. Imagine if Kirkland were healthy!?

Corners are playing well enough but aren't great. No huge complaints but no game changers out there. Tyler Byrd needs to be moved out there next year. Should have been already.

Safeties are really tough. No depth. Warrior needs to wrap up better but is all over the field. Abernathy is solid not great. We miss TKjr and Berry. Wish that we hadn't let Griffin walk - could really use him.

I wonder if Frost or any other coach would keep Shoop, and let him hire a defensive staff.

I would think Gillespie gets a solid chance to state his case too, if he wants to stick around
