Recruiting Discussion

That may have had something to do with it. But it's just excuse making from fans for the most part. I wasn't even asking for top 20 players or anything like that. Just thought he should have targeted more talented players.

It's not a stretch to think he should have been working harder.

You guys make me regret giving the guy a compliment.

Well, it certainly seemed like a backhanded/qualified compliment , which is why you're getting a little blowback. You basically said you're proud of Barnes, but you only think he put in more effort because he was called out by his boss.

You call it excuse making, I call it being rational and having reasonable and realistic expectations. No reason to get your jimmies rustled. We can have different opinions. We obviously had different expectations when Barnes was hired, and we saw varying levels of challenges. You call it laziness, I call it a process.

wow the NIT....can't wait for that

It beats the Sitting At Home Invitational. There have been 79 NCAA Tournaments, and Tennessee has had a seat at 20 of them. The idea from some of our fans that we have a divine right to attend each and every year is silly. Should we hope for it? Sure. Should we expect it? Maybe. But when you haven't been to it in 4 years and your program has as many fired coaches with Show Cause penalties as it does NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 7 years, you take improvement any way you can get it.

The NIT would disappoint me because I think we have talent and depth on paper to make the Dance, but the NIT would still be improvement.

Barnes has upped his recruiting game this season.
Was in to see 2019 5 star PGs and Centers in September and has already landed a 4 star commit in the 2019 class.
We can sit around and cry about the past but the future looks like it could be much brighter.

In before Bruin brings up the in home visit angle and beats it into oblivion.

Nah. Staff worked hard. Sucks

Maybe you want to remind us what your favorite assistant coach said about Barnes and recruitng since you brought up beating something into oblivion?

Probably had more to do with where each team played in post season.
If you had a choice in playing for a NC or maybe making the tourney, what would you choose?

I’m refraining. Like I said I think Barnes has been working recently.

Petrusev's quotes back this up...made multiple mentions to the fact Gonzaga is a tourney team each and every year.

So who's our next target?

I would hold off until spring if I'm Tennessee...continue to evaluate high school guys, maybe look into JUCO's, and keep ears open for graduate transfers also. As this season plays out you'll have an idea for what next years squad could most use.

Definitely keep that open scholly for the spring. There should be a ton of grad transfers this year. Go that route or JUCO.

GT... that's what I'm thinking. All the **** from the FBI's investigation hasn't hit the fan yet. Grad transfer pickings could be mighty good this cycle.

JUCO makes the rising sophomore class even larger. 5 instead of 4 unless Bone or Bowden were to redshirt. Right now we have 1 senior, 3 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 5 freshmen (plus 3x walk-ons).
