The Thread Where People Argue About Kneeling in the NFL (merged)

Yeah, they let them hit the QB hard when he dropped back 10x a game and the linebackers hit like Buicks.

Now the QB's drop back 40x a game and the LB's hit like mack trucks.

They had to change the rules.
I take it you never saw Chuck Bednarik, Ray Nitschke, and Dick Butkus play.

Free agency? Seriously?

The game has evolved so much organically on its own (and I think that's a good thing) that those rule changes are blips on the radar. Those rules didn't change the league, the league changes led to those rules.

Yeah, free agency blows IMO. On the pro level I've always more of a fan of the player(s) than a team, growing up the nearest NFL team was over 6 hours away.

I'm in agreement that the game has evolved, in many ways for the worse. QBs for the most part are mediocre at best because they don't learn the game anymore from HS up through college. Rules have been changed to promote scoring and to protect the players while techniques like proper tackling are ignored. Just not the same game as it was in the 70s, 80s and early 90s.

At first I was dumfounded by all this kneeling business and people complaining.. then I realized there are greater powers at work here:

Donald "Orange" Trump intentionally started to throw gas to flames on this issue knowing it would cause the NFL to tank financially. What do they do when they are financially strapped? Start laying people off that make a lot of money.

Now, who happens to make a lot of money from the NFL? Gruden.

So, Trump loves Gruden and the Vols. He knew tanking the NFL would bring us Gruden.

Thank you Mr. President

No they didn't. If the QBs weren't as protected you wouldn't see them dropping back 40 times a game.

Ever read Joe Namath's book? In it he describes one of the best games he ever played (called, a lot of QBs called their own plays back then) he threw the ball like 5 times the entire game.

There are too many teams, so the talent level drops.

I don't believe it's that. I go to a lot of HS football games and most schools here in Mid TN (where HS coaching is criminally bad) run a version of the wing or a spread offense. They put their best athlete at QB and let him "create" they are not teaching them to play the position.

No. I don't really need to. You're talking about the elite LB's. Even if they could make it in today's NFL, the average guy from their day couldn't. Take the average LB today...they're 30 lbs bigger and they're faster than yesterday's elite.

....and the people they are hitting are bigger and faster. It hurt just as much to get hit back then.

People can honestly look at how big and fast (forget about how skilled these guys are) and claim the talent is diluted? You guys are so FOS

I'm not saying the talent level is diluted. I do believe the knowledge of the game has gone down.

You just said "talent" tho. Not sure what you mean by knowledge of the game (which is not related to talent at all)? Playbooks are so complicated now. Route trees. Audibles. Etc. It's all more complicated.

Talent pool is bigger, so nah.
I think there are 32 teams with 53 players each. That represents the best 1,696 football players in the country. If there were 10 teams with 53 players, do you not think that you would then have the best 530 players, and player 531 to 1696 would not be quite as good as players 1 through 530?

You would be watching the 10 best qb's, instead of number 11 through 32. If you had 100 teams, then the quality of play would be that much worse. I can't believe that you believe what you are saying. Anytime you have more players, they are not as good.

Not one time in any of my posts did I mention talent.

Route trees are the same as they have been since the forward pass was put in. It's the pre-snap motion, adjustments and blocking (linemen pulling and such) that have gotten more complicated.

I say go back to leather helmets and soft pads.

I don't really watch that much football, I have watched most of UT/LSU games this year and a few minutes of a couple of other games. By far my favorite game of the year was the Georgia Tech v Tennessee game. It was like an old school leather helmet game without the leather helmets. I would have no problem LSU hiring that guy, very good tough football. Hands down the best game I have seen in many years.

Ask Frank Gifford after getting hit by Bednarik.

Yeah? How many concussions sidelined Gifford? Aikman and Young had to retire because of concussions. Aikman had the greatest line of all time and Young only full-time started 8 years. But dudes were bigger, faster stronger...it wasn't about one player. Everybody hits like Bednarik now.

OK. Sorry you missed a great game. It's not such a big deal that you need to double down on this silliness. Objectively, any fan of football would call that a great game.

It’s not silly. I don’t understand your fascism with regards to other people’s opinions. The enjoyment derived from entertainment is completely subjective. You may find a soccer match enthralling, I may go mow the yard. Neither of us is “wrong” because there’s no right or wrong here.

Gifford died of brain disease brought on by CTE.
