My hope in all of this noise around Gruden (besides the actual hope we land him) is that it means Currie is quietly and effectively locking down Kelly.

I'd be okay with that. Currie has a lot of great choices this go around. I don't think it will be Gruden, but I think we're going to be pleasantly surprised. If the money and admin support are there, and it sounds like they are, we'll get a very solid to excellent hire.

They're probably both staying put anyway. IMO, UT will be content to move along to Frost before paying Mullen $6M. Miss St is going to match most offers to keep Mullen, and UT will be happy to bow out of that bidding war, as long as we have attractive options with potentially more upside.

Intrigued by. I don't see va tech paying 6mil for him but I think Tenn might.

I have not been listening to sports talk that much but I just turned it on to hear will West say something about Jimmy reporting Butch will be here at least through Kentucky? Did anybody hear this?

Not sure Fuente wants to be in the SEC. VT is like UT used to be-- a destination job for people who want to come there and grow there. It would be surprising if he left... but certainly possible. I don't see any signs that UT is going to be unnecessarily frugal. I think we'll pay what we need-- within reason-- to get who we want. But I think we'll try to avoid a bidding war that inflates the numbers. UT definitely has a spreadsheet mentality.

I work pretty closely with an Auburn fan. He has a lot of good takes on Tennessee. Looks at Tennessee as almost a brother team (Bama and UGA rivalries shared).

He basically says there's no reason we shouldn't be able to get Kelly. We might be first in line, we have the money, we have the platform. It would be a great place for him to land.

Considering he's more objective than us and views Kelly as much more of a possibility than what a lot of people brush off as the "Chip Kelly Sweepstakes" it gives me some hope there.

The fact is, Kelly will end up somewhere, and there's absolutely no reason why it shouldn't be Knoxville.

Saban twice a year for starters. Why choose arguably the hardest route to a NC in the entire country instead of a half dozen or so easier routes?

Zero recruiting connections in this area too.

There are plenty of reasons he wouldn't end up here.

The kind of person who won't worry about having to play Saban twice a year is exactly the sort of coach we need here.

If Butch is fired before seasons end it will be after a loss to Southern Miss. Appears to me they’re trying hard to let him finish out the season. Just my opinion

I don't see Chip Kelly as realistic for a number of reasons. I think one is the fact that he's been in trouble with NCAA---I don't see the powers that be being interested in bringing a rule breaker into the fold. I think the other thing is, and this is JMO, but I don't think Kelly would see himself as a cultural fit here. Third, the offense he runs was indeed high powered and fun to watch. If you think about college football has changed since he came aboard--there are more teams that run this kind of spread option (Kellys teams were more run oriented)..and they know how to defend it BETTER.

I guess being scared of competition is why he gave it a shot in the NFL....

I just don’t think kelly is realistic because I don’t think UT will call him. I would be extremely happy to be wrong but I just have that gut feeling he won’t be considered a candidate by UT. Too easy of a slam dunk lol.

What you are saying makes sense but not if another embarrassing loss occurs. I realize it might be better financially for Butch to finish the year out but it's hard to imagine Fulmer and Manning, if they are indeed involved to the degree many say, sitting back and watching the train continue to wreck week after week.

I agree--haven't we, as a fan base, seen this movie too many times? I'd rather get someone that has upside and has a chance to be here for an extended period of time--Frost, Fuente, Mullen, heck I even like Durkin. I don't view Gruden or Kelly as realistic.
