Not really.

I'm not saying he's a bad coach by any means. He has a ring. But he has been out of the game for a long time and his reputation is greater among fans than it is among NFL owners. There's a cult of personality built up around Gruden. We're not talking about Belichik sitting on the sidelines for a decade and teams just hoping and praying they get a chance to interview him, but it sometimes seems that way with Gruden.

If owners were onboard with the idea of Gruden being a can't miss coaching hire, he would have been in the MNF booth for 2-3 years max.

And look up Lovie Smith's NFL record or even Jim Mora's. Both roughly around .500. Both on hot seats in the college game.

A source close to Gruden says since he has been out of coaching, he has received feelers from a dozen NFL and a dozen college teams. Among the interested have been most of his former employers—the Bucs, Raiders, 49ers and Eagles.

Next December, teams will tempt him again.

"I know it's hard for him," Rothman says.

The force within him is strong. It is what makes him a one-of-a-kind analyst. It is what made him a Super Bowl-winning coach. And it is what pulls him in different directions every day. The force is not easily controlled.

Gruden says flat out he is not trying to stir up a comeback. He never dismisses the possibility, though.

The youngest of the three Gruden boys, Jayson, is a freshman in high school. Dad is a volunteer coach on his football team. When Jayson goes off to college, perhaps the dynamic will change in Gruden's life.

The perfect situation might come along—great owner, perfect city, obscene money, total control, the chance to work with the next Peyton Manning.

Maybe the pull will be too powerful for him to resist.

Maybe not.

A chapter has yet to be written in Gruden's life story.

"I just wish I had more time," he says. "I'm fighting that every day. I wish the days were longer. Wish I had longer time on the planet. I'm running out of time."

The top names won't be about money. It will be about whether they want to coach CFB next year and if they want to coach at UT.

UT's not going to pay stupid money for Fuente. They'll simply move down the list.

This.

"Can I get what I need to win there, If I accept."

Do you all think we have an interim starting with the Kentucky game? I have a feeling Butch will be on the sideline for Kentucky.

What's dollar amount do you see as the bottom of the possibility?

IMO I think it's 5 mil

Two things:

Saying Grudes has been away from coaching for 10 years is true, but he has been immersed in football that whole time so that particular argument does not hold water.

Also, none of the "big fish" are coming here based on salary. It would be because they want to come here and hint none of them outside of Gruden probably do.

That is why you will get at best Frost and at worst Satterfield or Hoke.

I think there's flexibility at the top, but once you move down from the dream hire to the more realistic names, UT will expect to pay market value. And that's probably $4-$5M, plus sweeteners, for the second tier. If Gruden, Patterson or Petersen want to come, I think UT will leave everything on the table. But the top tier won't come down to money, IMO.

I certainly agree with you on the top tier not being about money. On the lower end it is odd of to hire a coach for less money than you fired a coach for so that is why see 5 mil being the low end.

Satterfield would be a disaster. If you hate CBJ’s offense, then you will despise Satterfield’s. Appt St has no passing game and it is because of scheme and not personnel.

You bring up his record like its bad. It isn't, at all.

Football hasn't seen this drastic change. Most offenses are just variations of past offenses.

You seriously don't think Gruden could have snagged a job by now if he really wanted one? Look at some of the awful retreats and hires made.

Jim Mora jr. .484 with ONE season above .500 and that was with Mike Vick in his prime

Love is .506 and has a super bowl appearance. He was a pretty good coach.

Let's be honest, college football is about recruiting, but you still have to be able to coach. Mora nor Lovie Smith have near the name recognition and cache as Gruden and Illinois isn't an easy school to recruit to. Gruden would KILL it in recruiting and he can coach.

CBJ has been a head coach for a decade. Some second tier coaches are light on HC experience. I think we'll go $5M and slightly upward for someone like Mullen or Fuente. But UT doesn't want to overpay for a G5 up-and-comer. If the market becomes more competitive (i.e., aTm and Auburn enter the coaching sweepstakes), UT will have to pay to play.

Gruden is still by far my #1 choice for head coach. I'm bowing out of that argument because I don't want things to get twisted to where I'm debating or defending a point that doesn't even support what I actually want for Tennessee, which is for Currie to be a hero and ink Chucky. You guys all made good points, and I absolutely think Gruden would kill it at Tennessee. Just don't think NFL owners are sitting up at night hoping he'll call them in January.

Carry on.

Right. He could have had plenty of jobs, just wants the right one. UT probably isn't it but idk how people try to act like the guy can't coach or somehow can't adapt to college.

If we are only willing to pay 5mil for Mullen or Fuente I think they both stay put. We have to do better than that IMO. I think we will

Lol then I don't even know what we were arguing about 😂😂

Lol, my original point was actually trying to dismiss his NFL record in a way to support him coming to Tennessee. I was on a "let's shame Gruden into taking the job" kick last night.

Meanwhile Chip Kelly is out there for the taking, if Gruden says no.

And, yeah yeah...he's going to UCLA. Maybe. But let's make a run at him either way.
