UT couldn't have paid Gruden the money in 2012 that they can offer now. Still, with Gruden, money isn't going to be the deciding factor. He'll either want to coach CFB next year or he won't. The talk won't even get to money till he says he's interested, then his agent will get involved.

money will not be a problem. they will not over pay anyone but money will not prevent from hiring any coach that wants to come here.
I think Gruden wants to coach, but he enjoys his legacy too much and the risk-free daily life of scheming up plays that never get called and making bank as a commentator on MNF while wistfully reminiscing about his coaching days to an audience that grows less and less familiar with his accomplishments every week.
If Currie really wants him, he needs to flat out call him out on his bluffs over the past 7 years, his diminishing legacy and stature, and his fruitless flirtation with jobs. Tell him that if he doesn't take this job, he'll never coach again. Shame him into taking it, lol.
Thought this was interesting coming from a gator fan
Aesius AD advice: browbeating is a great way to help sign potential hires.
Probably a ton. Just look at some of the current coaches.
Lol. If Gruden is such a longshot candidate but is also Currie's top choice, then trying to woo him isn't going to work given his track record for turning down jobs.
Maybe he needs to be reminded of his age and his declining market value in a world where a dude who won a Super Bowl 15 years ago doesn't really register with many/any NFL owners anymore. I think Gruden could quit MNF, shop himself around to NFL teams in the offseason, and legitimately come up empty-handed. NFL owners would have the same reservations about him that many of us do on here. He hasn't coached in a decade and his NFL record actually isn't that great.
Maybe appealing to his ego and his desire to leave a legacy would work better than just groveling at his feet and begging him to coach the team.

I wonder how much real NFL interest he's received in the last few years?
IMO, Gruden really likes the idea of coaching at UT, but the reality may not quite match up. It would be a real change in lifestyle-- for himself and Cindy. She would be a big part of this decision, too. I get the impression they're both happy with their life.
You're right-- now's the time. At his age, if he wants to make the move, and if UT's the place, this is the year. The opportunity may not come around again.
The cult of Gruden is overblown, IMO. If he was a hot name among NFL owners every offseason, he would be coaching somewhere. He and his agent and PR people, along with his stint on MNF, have successfully created an almost cult of personality around him. Especially for a guy with 1 ring and a .550 NFL record.

He will tell you over and over again how much he loves what he does at ESPN from co-hosting Monday Night Football, to his pre-draft Grudens QB Camp series to covering the NFL Draft, but you can see the desire that burns to coach again. His eyes lie and give it away.
You can hear it in Grudens voice. Hes always been emphatic when he talks, but he wants to coach me or anyone that walks through the doors at the FFCA building for that matter rather than just do an interview for PewterReport.com.
I asked Gruden, who turns 54 on August 17, but looks 45, if he was annoyed or flattered that his name gets attached to vacant, high profile NFL and college coaching jobs each year. Fresh off of watching some game tape for the millionth time this year, he took that question and ran with it.
Ive met with several people I wont deny that, Gruden said. People just about every year I talk about coming back to coach. Im not in here every day at 4:30 or 4:00 in the morning watching pinball. You know? Im preparing myself to come back. I am. Every day. Im preparing to come back.
It helps me in my broadcasting and I think if you lose that edge you cant come back unless you are totally wired with college football, personnel, schemes, the CBA, how people are practicing, trends, you know. Youve got stay on top of this stuff.
