Recruiting Forum Talk XXXIX

Yeah, if I remember, he had maybe 1 post where he said that it wasn't outside the realm of possibility that someone from UT may have conatcted Gruden, but I don't think he ever went any further than that.

Phil must’ve told him they were going all in.

Exciting thought:
If we whiff on Gruden because he doesn't really really want to coach, but we come close, then the guys in control should easily be motivated to make a solid move on a guy like Frost.

UT couldn't have paid Gruden the money in 2012 that they can offer now. Still, with Gruden, money isn't going to be the deciding factor. He'll either want to coach CFB next year or he won't. The talk won't even get to money till he says he's interested, then his agent will get involved.

I think Gruden wants to coach, but he enjoys his legacy too much and the risk-free daily life of scheming up plays that never get called and making bank as a commentator on MNF while wistfully reminiscing about his coaching days to an audience that grows less and less familiar with his accomplishments every week.

If Currie really wants him, he needs to flat out call him out on his bluffs over the past 7 years, his diminishing legacy and stature, and his fruitless flirtation with jobs. Tell him that if he doesn't take this job, he'll never coach again. Shame him into taking it, lol.

Speaking of money:

money will not be a problem. they will not over pay anyone but money will not prevent from hiring any coach that wants to come here.

Aesius AD advice: browbeating is a great way to help sign potential hires.

I think if Gruden wants to coach it's almost now or never for him. The further he gets away from the last time he's coached, the harder it will be for him to return. It's going on 10 years now.

Thought this was interesting coming from a gator fan

I do tip my cap for Butch and how he helped us rebuild. I think he will be remembered as our zook if we get the hire right. Cupboard ain't bare and although Hamilton was an idiot he got the facilities built up nicely. We are poised to make some noise.

I wonder how much real NFL interest he's received in the last few years?

Lol. If Gruden is such a longshot candidate but is also Currie's top choice, then trying to woo him isn't going to work given his track record for turning down jobs.

Maybe he needs to be reminded of his age and his declining market value in a world where a dude who won a Super Bowl 15 years ago doesn't really register with many/any NFL owners anymore. I think Gruden could quit MNF, shop himself around to NFL teams in the offseason, and legitimately come up empty-handed. NFL owners would have the same reservations about him that many of us do on here. He hasn't coached in a decade and his NFL record actually isn't that great.

Maybe appealing to his ego and his desire to leave a legacy would work better than just groveling at his feet and begging him to coach the team.

Imagine if Gruden and Kelly both joined the SEC this year. SEC coaches would go from terrible to having 3 of the top in the country. Assuming Gruden does good of course

Probably a ton. Just look at some of the current coaches.

The cult of Gruden is overblown, IMO. If he was a hot name among NFL owners every offseason, he would be coaching somewhere. He and his agent and PR people, along with his stint on MNF, have successfully created an almost cult of personality around him. Especially for a guy with 1 ring and a .550 NFL record.

I think appealing to his ego would be more effective than shaming, as you put it. But you could be right about him being put off by groveling.

IMO, Gruden really likes the idea of coaching at UT, but the reality may not quite match up. It would be a real change in lifestyle-- for himself and Cindy. She would be a big part of this decision, too. I get the impression they're both happy with their life.

You're right-- now's the time. At his age, if he wants to make the move, and if UT's the place, this is the year. The opportunity may not come around again.

I've often wondered myself. He claims he's waiting on the perfect scenario. Surely in 10 years that would have occurred by now if it was going to. He worked for AL Davis so I'm sure the owner would be important to him. Many jobs have opened and filled in that time. I think his clock is ticking and he knows it.

It's time for someone to be the Saban to Bamas Shula and Meyer to Floridas zook... so Gruden or Frost ! Lol

I share your fears. I would be really excited, but pretty nervous as well

For anyone who doesn't know the pewter report covers the Tampa Bay Bucs and this was a hot report they published this past summer.

He will tell you over and over again how much he loves what he does at ESPN from co-hosting Monday Night Football, to his pre-draft Gruden’s QB Camp series to covering the NFL Draft, but you can see the desire that burns to coach again. His eyes lie and give it away.

You can hear it in Gruden’s voice. He’s always been emphatic when he talks, but he wants to coach me – or anyone that walks through the doors at the FFCA building for that matter – rather than just do an interview for PewterReport.com.

I asked Gruden, who turns 54 on August 17, but looks 45, if he was annoyed or flattered that his name gets attached to vacant, high profile NFL and college coaching jobs each year. Fresh off of watching some game tape for the millionth time this year, he took that question and ran with it.

“I’ve met with several people – I won’t deny that,” Gruden said. “People – just about every year I talk about coming back to coach. I’m not in here every day at 4:30 or 4:00 in the morning watching pinball. You know? I’m preparing myself to come back. I am. Every day. I’m preparing to come back.

“It helps me in my broadcasting and I think if you lose that edge … you can’t come back unless you are totally wired with college football, personnel, schemes, the CBA, how people are practicing, trends, you know. You’ve got stay on top of this stuff.”
