Didn't catch the edit.
FTR, I do know people who have decent connections in the AD (not amazing...wouldn't really trust anything I heard from them about a coaching search but likely would about things happening in the locker room). But I don't really bother them asking about rumors and the like. I've heard small bits in the past about things that turned out to be true. Heard stuff that turned out to not be true as well. Heard lots of reminiscing, hypotheticals, and speculation on events that happened in Knoxville years ago.
Now that I'm not living in Knoxville, I dont hear much. Honestly, I'm glad that's the case. It's easier to look at things with impartiality that way and I prefer living in one of the largest metropolises on earth more than I did living in Knoxville. Personally, I wouldn't trade what I've got here.
What I'm really getting at here is that lots of people with connections to Knoxville/UT can play the two/three degrees of separation game with important past and present figures in our AD (even stupid nobodies like me  ). Doesn't mean everything heard should be taken as gospel.
Why is it so hard to imagine Blackburn overstating (or being overconfident in) his relationship with Petersen? Or Petersen potentially not wanting to work for a friend in a business where firings are semi-regular in a region of the country with so much fan and media scrutiny?
I'm not exactly sure what the hang up is with the bolded part. Past experience can be an indicator of what will happen in the future. Thats a big reason many dont want Petrino.
As for people saying he'd never leave BSU, that's not really the case at all. People always said hed be super selective about choosing somewhere to live and work.
1. I dont doubt youve got a friend you trust who knows Blackburn and heard those things. Doesnt necessarily make the things hes heard from Blackburn true or trustworthy. Surely you can understand that, right?
2. Yes, I trust the many articles published from many different sports writers from many different national outlets published over the years (which all said that Petersen doesnt see himself living/working in the southeast) more than I trust something your friend said David Blackburn told him about Chris Petersen. You can reduce that to trusting google if you want to, though. Wouldnt be the first time youve refused to allow any nuance into a conversation.
It was never my intention to say that David Blackburn was intentionally lying to your friend or anything like that. I do think its possible, if not likely, that Blackburn could totally believe that his friendship with Chris Petersen could be sufficient to get him to Knoxville and just be mistaken.
People misevaluate others and circumstances all the time. That doesnt make it a lie by any means. Sometimes people have overconfidence in their abilities. Matt Hasselback and his famous we want the ball and were gonna score snafu comes to mind. But that didnt make him a liar by any means.
I boils down to one thing. You trust people you've never met, I tend to trust people that I've had years of interaction with. You do your thing, I'll do mine.
