I don't understand why they would switch Jones for Mullen. Didn't he lose to UGA 31-3 the week before UT lost to UGA. I'm not seeing that as an improvement.

He is not an improvement at all. He also lost to powerhouses South Alabama, Kentucky and Arkansas last year. Mullen=5 more years of mediocrity. And Butch beat him in every recruiting battle that I can think of where they were both in it for the same recruit.

This actually leads me to something I've been thinking about a lot today. Gruden has some endorsement deals that he will have to drop. That certainly complicates things.

why would he have to drop his endorsement deals? He can still pitch Hooters in between his farm bureau commercials...lol

Okay, this is my HYPOTHETICAL best case scenario. I don't necessarily expect all this to happen, just thinking out loud.

1) Currie hangs Butch out in the wind til Butch is ready to negotiate the buyout down. How much? I don't know, half or so. Butch then is able to resign with dignity. This helps Currie gain (more) confidence from the boosters.

2) Haslam and Sexton get Butch a position coach job with the Browns. This is a step in the right direction for Butch's desire to coach in the NFL, as well as it helps with the UT buyout that got negotiated down.

3) All of this takes place, ironically at about the same time Gruden signs on the dotted line. He's locked in as our next HC. ESPN allows him to do the coaching staff assembly, requiring only that he finish the season of MNF. The NCAA allows Gruden/UT to recruit while the interim staff coach out the rest of the season, similar to Meyer/Ohio St.

4) Currie names Fulmer the interim. Because the word is out that Gruden is officially our next full time HC, everyone knows and understands that Fulmer will only be temporary. I like this idea, 'cause it gets a full-blooded UT man in front of this current group of players, allowing them to see what it really means to sport the Orange and T. (you ever hear Butchs teams reciting the maxims vs Fulmers teams reciting the maxims?) Further, it would rally the fanbase (I think, maybe) and give some of the boosters that love Fulmer opportunities to relive the good ol' days, again, making some of the Boosters happy. Plus, maybe it would officially settle some of the bad ju-ju that has surrounded the program since Fulmers dismissal was (arguably) mishandled, giving us a fresh start with Gruden.

An obvious downside to this, is it doesn't give the current staff as great of an opportunity to audition for the next set of hires.
I don't think you'd have to pay Coach Fulmer much either.

Well, what do you guys think?
Hypothetically of course.

1 thru 3 would be a brilliant win/win scenario if we could pull it off. I disagree on 4 but I see where you're going with it. Nothing against Fulmer. I have a ton of respect for the man and what he's accomplished. I just think we should have Fulmer doing other things in the program and just let Hoke finish the season.

I saw a documentary about him getting fired at Oakland, hired by Tampa Bay, and facing his old team in the next Super Bowl. The Raiders did not change anything in their playbook that Gruden himself drew up.

Now, I think Gruden knows his football, but he won that Super Bowl in large part due to Oakland's stupidity. If you know the strengths of your own plays, you are going to know the weaknesses and how to defend them.

I will be shocked if he takes another coaching job. Like John Madden, he is locked into color commentary broadcasting. If he coaches again and screws up, he would have a hard time regaining that job. Oh he talks getting back, but that is just his own self-promotion.

The idea of having him is good, but that is probably all it ever will be.

So you're saying he took two teams to the Super Bowl! Soon

Bingo bingo bingo. I really does amaze me how quickly people are willing to settle for a coach just because "he's an upgrade from Butch" or "we could do worse." It's no wonder UT has fed us slop.

Omg...

My source just contacted me. His brother, the stud milker that works at the UT Stables, was "kicked in the head by a horse he was working on".
I'm getting really nervous.

What you're saying is what i believe will happen. Hoke as interim that is.
