I have a buddy who coaches at Vineland (Up in Jersey), he is the RB/Special Team's Coach (Weird combo, but it is a high school). He said Gruden supposedly came to his school today as some type of community service type event. Anywho, my friend, Gruden, and Coach Russo were chatting before the (supposed) event started. He asked Gruden straight up if he was coming Knoxville and he responded by saying, "We shall see." He said he smiled and then changed the convo. Don't shoot the messenger. It seems strange to me that Gruden would be up in Jersey this week, because NFL isn't covering anyone in that area.
I saw a documentary about him getting fired at Oakland, hired by Tampa Bay, and facing his old team in the next Super Bowl. The Raiders did not change anything in their playbook that Gruden himself drew up.
Now, I think Gruden knows his football, but he won that Super Bowl in large part due to Oakland's stupidity. If you know the strengths of your own plays, you are going to know the weaknesses and how to defend them.
I will be shocked if he takes another coaching job. Like John Madden, he is locked into color commentary broadcasting. If he coaches again and screws up, he would have a hard time regaining that job. Oh he talks getting back, but that is just his own self-promotion.
The idea of having him is good, but that is probably all it ever will be.
Have you ever been to Cleveland? If I was Haslam and could pull strings to get CJG to Tennessee, I would at least make him say no to being the Browns coach. Other than CJG loving Tennessee and the Brown's organization being a dumpster fire, what is the reason for coaching at Tennessee over the Browns?
