Troy Calhoun would be an excellent coach for UT. Not a big splash, but a very solid coach

It was very interesting reading about their multiple looks & formations on offense and the limitations/restrictions they are faced with on the football side of things.

Of course, their players are pretty freakin' smart. Poised and focused you might add as well.

Also interesting that he can't have any one that weighs more than 280 or anyone that can't run 1.5 miles in 11 minutes.

Doing more with less than arguably anyone.

Calhoun barely has a winning record in the MWC and will likely finish 5-7 or 4-8 this year. He won't be a candidate.

We have to think beyond guys who just tick one or two boxes. There are plenty of guys out there who can field highly competitive teams every 2-3 seasons in lower-tier conferences.

meh, 3 of their 4 losses this year are @Michigan (by 16 and it was a close game throughout), SDSU (by 4) and @Navy (by 3). Only other loss was @New Mexico.

I think they'll recover and get bowl eligible.

He's got a .554 winning percentage in the MWC and a .581 winning percentage overall... at a service academy.

That's great for him. Still doesn't make him a candidate for the Tennessee job.

There are probably 25 other coaches that you can make arguments for, but ultimately they just don't tick enough boxes to be serious candidates.

Yeah, he is very respected in the coaching community and has a great tract record. Give him the resources of an SEC team and he would excel. But our fan base is dreaming the impossible dream. Give me Gruden or give me death.

I think Calhoun checks a lot of boxes, more than guys like Brohm and Frost who are high risk/unknown commodities. I also think Calhoun is a high ceiling guy given what is has been able to do with significant hurdles at AFA that he wouldn't have at UT.

Boxes checked:

- significant experience and success as a college head coach
- NFL experience as an OC
- X & O's guru
- no NCAA/Academic baggage
- not too old, not too young (51)
- financially it makes sense (only makes about $800k, low buyout and would have plenty of cash for a dynamic staff)
- dynamic offense
- recruits nationally

I agree. I would take him over Brohm, Frost, Bobo or any other up and comer.

Biggest question marks for me with Calhoun would be lack of ties to the south, and while being an OC in the NFL is definitely a high pressure gig, the pressure of being the UTHC is very high. He seems like a very self confident guy, but Colorado Springs and the AFA are nothing compared to the SEC and the cess pool that is local Knoxville media.
