Official Jon Gruden Thread XVIII

Is Gruden really the coach everyone thinks he is? Don't get me wrong the man knows football and is from the Holmgren tree of coaching which produced a lot of good coaches. However the super bowl team in Tampa was stacked pretty good when he arrived there. They didn't have a great QB but that defense was amazing. One could say he came in and won with Dungy's players, which is still impressive to win a super bowl but it's not like he had to build the team.

I never start threads, I just wanted to see what everyone thought about this. And I'm not trying to hate on Gruden, I think he is a good coach, I just don't know if he is as good as people make him out to be. Also I do not think we have a shot at getting him to Knoxville other than when he comes to visit his kid.

Sorry I didn't even see the Jon Gruden thread, If you want to merge it go ahead. Guess I probably should of looked around before starting it. Another reason I don't start threads.

I saw a documentary about him getting fired at Oakland, hired by Tampa Bay, and facing his old team in the next Super Bowl. The Raiders did not change anything in their playbook that Gruden himself drew up.

Now, I think Gruden knows his football, but he won that Super Bowl in large part due to Oakland's stupidity. If you know the strengths of your own plays, you are going to know the weaknesses and how to defend them.

I will be shocked if he takes another coaching job. Like John Madden, he is locked into color commentary broadcasting. If he coaches again and screws up, he would have a hard time regaining that job. Oh he talks getting back, but that is just his own self-promotion.

The idea of having him is good, but that is probably all it ever will be.

When you're already a multi-millionaire, everyone thinks you're a football genius, you've got a SB ring on your finger and you've got a cushy job which takes you all expenses paid around the nation every year.......

.....why in the h3ll would you move to Knoxville, deal with 19-21 year-olds primadonnas, have to compete with Saban's machine (and Smart's upcoming machine), deal with all the fanatics in Vol-land....?

Ain't. No. Way.

Drop it kids and move on.

Thank you!! I have not thought of this... you bring much Knowledge and help to us poor folks who just don?t get it

He did not get fired in Oakland. In fact, Tampa Bay had to give up a high draft pick to hire him away.
