Official Jon Gruden Thread XVIII

I've said it before, Butch is a salesman. The longer he stays here the more his "brand" is damaged, and his ability to communicate the narrative to his next employer is undermined. The "toxic" point, while perhaps true, will be in his favor when telling his story to another school. It makes for a good reason to leave mid-season.

Keep in mind...that Oregon State job is wide open and needing a rebuild...that's another 5 years for Butch. And they might be thrilled with 8 wins and a bowl game.

Most seem to agree that nothing will happen until after the Bama game, however, using your scenario (which I believe is correct) Why would Butch wait any longer?

Not a challenge but just a question!

Wouldn't have to take a single recruiting trip. Send out the staff and he could communicate to recruits with a phone call. I believe official visits would skyrocket with perspective players coming for a one on one with Jon Gruden.

And the phone calls would be next level!

This coincides with what we heard after the Georgia game....Butch was not going to be invited back, though he thought there might be a path to staying. There wasn't. He would be allowed to stay until we got word from the coach we wanted, or until it became more than Butch could stand.

It's business. The man who blinks first loses.

I don't know if this report is true, but it would not surprise me at all.

If Currie is playing chess with Butch, waiting for him to blink first, I would think heating up the seat a little bit with the media would push him closer to the door. They seem to be taking it easy on him still.

I like the interim coach idea. I believe it would have to be Brady Hoke because if I'm Fulmer I'm not agreeing to go to Alabama to get rolled on.

I assumed we wouldn't see a trigger pulled until after the Alabama game. It would definitely have to be right after that though because I would assume you want your new Head coach named in time for early signing period saves.

No way Butch is fired before he has to walk the plank in Tuscaloosa.

I wonder if it's optics as well for Currie something along the lines of "losing to our biggest rival in this fashion is not acceptable for the TN players, fans, etc,.." kind of like Ohio St and Michigan have done in the past...this would help his support from fans I would think? Just a thought? No insider, no knowledge just a long time lurker...love this thread!!

Whatever it takes. It's clear the wheels have fallen off. Every wheel.

Good point, but I'm not sure Currie needs any more fan support, there's plenty of it. I think those saying Currie is playing mind games with Butch may be correct. If Butch wants the full buyout, he's going to have to continue to endure through this rough period as we're looking for a replacement behind the scenes, in hopes that he gets fed up and drops the buyout some.

Butch sounded like always. I will say he is not showing any passion, no fire so to speak, nothing motivational, nothing about the rivalry and what it means, he just drones on with his coachisms and handles the softballs that are gently tossed his way.

Keeping Butch around while we shop, also keeps him effectively out of the coaching job sweepstakes. His choices will be limited if he's not the first guy out.

I don't think he needs any more ammunition. I think he just realizes that this is a lost season--there is nothing he can do to salvage it. So, why not let Butch twist in the wind until the end of the season if necessary, while trying to save your department a few million on the buyout?

Good point

Along with the other reasons that have been stated for Butch perhaps agreeing to negotiate a buyout, I think he would have a good monetary reason for doing so as well. If he is fired, he theoretically gets the full amount, but that amount is offset by his future earnings coaching elsewhere. If he negotiates the buyout, he might accept a lower number in a lump sum, but with no offset for future earnings. Negotiating what that fixed number might be is the trick of the negotiation, for both sides.

And right there is the reason Mr. Currie has slow played this.

Yes sir I agree :good!:

I know I'll get slaughtered for this but I usually listen to WNML while I'm at my desk. I will say that I think Will West's tone has really changed 30 minutes into the show as compared to the last few weeks. He and Josh have basically refused to talk about a coaching change in the past. Now they are saying "Currie is not sitting on his but". Nothing earth shattering I just thought it was very interesting.
