I don't get the Google candidate. Outside of like 10 coaches the casual fan will have to Google the new HC anyway

I get your point but I think it's a little more than 10. Any of these coaches that come from the mid-major ranks come with a little more risk. People view those types of hires beneath the University of Tennessee. They look at other big time programs and think Tennessee should hire a Saban, Kelly, Gruden, or even a tier lower at an established school, take one from another power 5 school. Right or wrong that is the perception amongst a lot of fans.

Lol. That's my point. They don't want to have to Google the next coach's name. They would like to see a recognizable name. I'm not saying Frost isn't a good coach or couldn't get it done here. What I'm saying is if you have to Google his name many will view it as a risky, more of the same type of hire.

Pretty solid list below, I'd say (from Wikipedia):

Frost was coached by Stanford’s Bill Walsh, Nebraska’s Tom Osborne, the New York Jets’ Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick, and Jon Gruden.

Frost has worked for the following head coaches as an assistant/positional coach:
Frank Solich: Nebraska (1998–2003); Ohio (2005–present)
Ron Prince: Kansas State (2006–2008)
Mark Farley: Northern Iowa (2001–present)
Chip Kelly: Oregon Ducks (2009–2012); Philadelphia Eagles (2013–2015); San Francisco 49ers (2016)
Mark Helfrich: Oregon Ducks (2013–2016)

So true. In the back of my optimistic mind I'm thinking Currie is being super sneaky and is actually wrapping up a deal with Kelly behind the scenes and the day after he fires Butch he announces CK without anyone knowing.

:good!: Make it happen, John.

Damn. Scott Frost is the football coach equivalent of the kid who has academic scholarship offers from every Ivy League school + Stanford + MIT by the time he's entering his junior year of high school.

You don't have to sell Scott Frost to me. I'm simply saying that they'll be many that will either walk away or at least scale back their support for the UT AD if They hire a coach that's not a recognizable, established P5 head coach. People are starting to feel they are being taken advantage of.

Seems like a "real college coach" with a pretty good work ethic to me. A damn good one too. Who else could UT hire with a better winning % at a Power 5 school?

CK is my number one choice, but there's something about him that seems somewhat smoke and mirrors. I don't know why but it strikes me that way. But 46-7 doesn't lie. And the way the team held together for a couple years after he left and then immediately crumbled is indicative that he was a badass coach and his replacement just couldn't maintain what he built, but COULD win with what was essentially Kelly's team.

You might as well give Helfrich's wins to him (before the team hit a downward trend). He's technically 70-11 with two NC game appearances, lol.

No. We need Swaggerfield.

I've been telling you guys, you might as well accept disappointment now. No matter who is hired, a large chunk of the fans are going to be ticked off. There will be no great unifying hire made by this sorry administration. I just hope they get lucky on a guy that can actually coach.

What is making you include Currie in “sorry administration”. He handled the baseball coaching search beautifully. Brought back lady Vols which a lot of people like. And everything he does is completely on lock down.

That’s what happened with Saban to Bama. No one knew until the deal was finalized. Sure there was whispers but no one really knew.

Agreed, I'm not really disparaging his ability, just his hunger. Saban doesn't have his success because he is the most innovative coach around, it's because of his never-satisfied hunger combined with his coaching and administrative ability. From a lot of reports Chip Kelly does not want to deal with college anymore. That is a red flag to me, especially at a place like Tennessee where you have to really work hard at recruiting to succeed.

That’s a very strong pedigree.

We had conversations before and after church today and no one knew who Frost was-I said you soon will. He will be a winner and schools who passed over him or didn't extend an offer will be kicking themselves. Would I rather have Gruden of course! But Frost would be a big hire and I would show my thanks to the AD $. They screw up again, I'm done as are many others.

I think Kelly would have won a NC with sophomore or junior year Mariota. Moot point because he had a show cause, but still. That was his team and QB that Helfrich rode to the playoffs.

I hope you're right, but this is not baseball, and he is the guy chosen by an administration that I don't have any belief in at all when it comes to commitment to excellence in CFB. He is their puppet as far as I can see, but I hope you are right.
