I think when the AD was removed from under the president and placed under the Chancellor was when things started going south. Hasn't really been the same since.

Yep. Many have said this is when the decline began. Mathews has mentioned it several times on his show over the years. Fulmer also said the decline began around 2002 when the Johnson and Dickey stepped down. We need leadership at the top like those two guys who truly understand the importance of athletics to that university. I can't help but wonder if career academics like Davenport roll their eyes when the idea of paying 6 million for a football coach along with other necessary investements is brought to the table. She should have zero say in any of this IMO.

My opinion of him is that he should have stayed with his team and left after the season. He is right to have left Butch. Butch was shortening his career. But you don’t quit mid season. If I were him I would’ve just went to the NFL.

I agree. I think that if he would have listened to you, he might be making money right now.

^This. People need to understand that no one hates the admin and bureaucracy it produces more than the faculty. Universities do what universities do with zero regard for faculty and staff's opinion or input. Academics are woefully underpaid while tuition rises and classrooms get too large.

That's education period

There’s plenty to find wrong and point at without using a goob like Smotherman to prop up your point.

Why the hell keep digging in the dumpster?

It is. It was a dumb move. It probably works fine at small schools or those where athletics don't matter much. It is too big of business to run at a statewide university in the best conference in America to be pushed down to the Chancellor.

All it told me was they hired a less than competent System President who could not be CEO of it all.

Do other programs have their AD under the Chancellor also or is it just our dumbass admin? And whoever said that move is when things went south is dead on. Huge huge mistake!! It would be nice if Davenport understood that football is the doorstep and applied that thinking in her decisions- I would hope she is as supportive of Currie as she appears to be in a couple of interviews. UT can't ever get out of its own damn way,it's sad.

Problem is Currie is only the face of the AD. If it was solely up to him I would give him a greater benefit of the doubt. From what I've been told, there's a lot of dysfunction between all the parties involved. I'm not confident that we get everyone on the same page. That's Curries biggest hurdle imo.

Fair point. Hope he can navigate the dysfunction and make a good hire.

The longer they wait the more angry the fan base will become. Even if they are doing things behind closed doors the fans will start attacking the AD even more because he's giving the impression that he is to e with what's happening so screw if he feels ready he needs to just nut up and do it.

And none of that really matters. If he makes a good hire, no one will care about the timeline.

I'm sure he knows that.

I would like to know if other athletic programs are aligned like this as well. If so, do they make it work? I was under the impression that when the title of Vice Chancellor was added to the AD, it granted the position a certain degree of autonomy from the Chancellor that they had not had for a while.

No, the AD answers to the Chancellor.
