Why shouldn't a university strive to be great academically? Seems to be the reason for all of it.

I understand we all love Tennessee football and want to see it succeed but athletics should always be second to academics.

Yes, but the point is that these things can be complementary. Alabama can hardly build dorms fast enough, they've got way more students from out of state than they used to, and that has led to a considerable cash inflow that has benefited the university as a whole. Alabama has raised its profile as an academic institution in part because their football program is a success. People want to be associated with a winner. Alumni want to donate to a winner.

Yes, universities are principally about academics, but they're also about developing pride among their students, because those students are future targets for resources. The biggest part of reaching the intellectual heights universities want is raising the money it takes to attract the most prestigious faculty, grants, and students.

Athletics are an important source of school pride. The academic and athletics side do not have to be in conflict, if people are willing to surrender a little autonomy. But that's not how bureaucracy tends to operate. You tend to get these developed institutions that believe they know best, and they jealously guard their turf against each other, preventing the kind of adaptation it takes to survive in a changing landscape. There are elements on both sides of this who are bull-headed and resistant to change.

Oh, the whole freaking system is corrupt. Tuition keeps rising for no real reason as college degrees become worth less and less. And we force people who could earn large sums of money at their craft (football, basketball, etc.) go to school so we get a form of free labor off of them while, as you said, everyone else gets rich.

It's a bubble. It's going to burst eventually like the housing bubble did, too.

What type of game plan do we see next week?

I would imagine we'll see the same pathetic offense for the first half, and once Bama is up 35-0 Butch will start running the ball and bleeding clock to shorten the game. Saban will likely do the same. It will probably be one of the shortest games in recent SEC on CBS history.

Butch knows he doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning and only a remote chance of even scoring. We likely won't even cross the 50. Ending the game as fast as possible is his best option.

Some have elite football programs, others don't. There is not necessarily any natural correlation.

I'd love to have the head football coach for about five of the universities on that list. These things don't have to be mutually exclusive. But apparently some people need some sense talked into them about what exactly the cash cow is for both the univeristy and the community.

UT Admin has to realize they are going to lose fan base with another crap hire. People will lose interest and it will not breed young fans bc we suck.

The model is there. Other schools do it. Having top-tier athletic and academic programs are not mutually-exclusive.

Bad personnel decisions have put UT in our current predicament. And it will take good personnel decisions to get us out.

In the post Dooley coach hire, it was said that the administration was getting too much of the athletic profits. Cheek relented and agreed to let the AD keep more of it's money. Correct?

But there are egos to be massaged on the hill. Who cares what us redneck peon t-shirt fans think? We'll rally behind the next guy as soon as he wins the press conference, then we'll patient wait for him to win the East in 5 years because he'll start at year -1, then year 0, then year 1, etc.

As an assistant prof, I work my tail off and I've only gotten one cost-of-living raise, and probably won't get another until I get tenure (and then another way down the line when I get promoted to full prof) - unless I get a job offer from somewhere else.

Meanwhile, there's a whole caste of well-paid administrators who, as far as I can tell, don't really do anything aside from go to meetings and invent new ways to waste faculty's time and charge students higher tuition. It's infuriating. I love being a prof, but there are days i wish I could burn the whole system to the ground.

If I was an AD, I would get fired the first time an administrator made a fuss about coaches salaries, because I'd respond with, "Let's talk about administrative bloat and it's role in jacking up tuition. What, exactly, would you say it is that you do here?"

No. Why shouldn’t he fire him? We are playing like garbage and he isn’t going to get offered another job. Pay him the buyout and try to get hoke to salvage the season. Anything is better than this

I promise, it's a lot more involved and complicated than we know or would like to think.

Let me put it this way. We all seem to believe and have been assured that a change is happening. That it is enivitable.

This means the powers that be have decided that Jones tenure is not acceptable. It means we aren't accepting mediocrity, even in a era where reveunue has been high.

It means we are going to swing for the fences.

I'm going to be patient and see what happens. To me, there are only positive signs, and I'm a real pessimist

John Currie is failing Tn football. What is he waiting for?

We don’t know this. I have confidence he will do us proud. Being the AD at K State he has been compiling a list and developing relationships with coaches preparing to replace CBS already putting him a leg up on this situation. Being quiet and calculated are actually great signs.

It’s all going to be ok. I’m just going to keep supporting the team, enjoying life and have confidence that we will have a great coach next year. I’m not concerned with the timeframe.

I actually don't have much of a problem with waiting until end of the year. I would like to see a change made if it looks like we're at risk of missing a bowl or in order to stop the bleeding in recruiting, but overall, I'd rather he take his time to get it right this time.

He can fire Butch and still take his time. It has to happen next week. Otherwise Currie starts to look hugely incompetent. Every national beat writer in the country will be calling him out for leaving Jones on the job if he's still employed on Monday morning after the epic thrashing we're going to receive in Tuscaloosa and what will be 14 quarters in a row without a touchdown.

I will always follow the Vols. But, I have, and most all these posters on here, have lost faith and hope in CBJ. I need that hope that we can actually win a game. If I don't have that, I will watch/listen, but my heart won't be in it.
