I don’t have any info here, but I think that narrative is overblown. Not calling you out or anything. I don’t think there’s any plan to sink the programs and just focus on academics. Those guys know what a successful programs does for financial and administrative support for the school. I just think what people are willing to risk to get there varies.

Remember, we’re only 5 years removed from the athletics program almost being a liability to the school. No one wants to put all the chips on the table if it’s not a sure thing.

He doesn't want to abandon athletics, but the chancellor, president and a number of board members want academic excellence to be a larger part of the strategic plan. They would love to position UT as a top-tier research institution.

Do you think those goals are at odds with a successful athletics program? On the surface they shouldn't be. But I've heard that there's a lot of resentment on both sides at UT over the athletics vs academics struggle.

What motivation do they have to change? They are one of the most profitable programs in college football. Could they even create the additional revenue to cover spending an additional $20Mil in investment?

What’s the state of Nebraska AD money wise?

With the way their season is going I don’t think Riley will still be the coach next year. I would think Nebraska would be able to match any offer we put on Frost and don’t see UTAD getting into a bidding war and overpaying for an up and comer. (I would for Frost, but that’s just me) I’d love to have him but if he wants to go to Nebraska in any way, I would think he’d end up there over us even though it’s a lesser job.

His desire to be at Nebraska could also be overstated, who really knows at this point.

This has been my biggest fear. I believe they really don't care as much as us fans. Tops in revenue and profitability and even with how they play 100k still trot out and spend $. Keep the gravy train running and don't rock the boat.

They have up until the PC tomorrow morning for BAMA week.

If it isn't announced by 8 or 9 AM tomorrow the. It will likely be next Monday or maybe even after the next non BAMA loss which would be pretty mind boggling but maybe they don't think the team plays any better either way?

Some of them don't have any motivation to change at all. Good is the enemy of great. Some people at UT are content to be good. Only we're not even that right now. I can't see UT outspending Bama on football. But I can see us allocating the money to be back among the elite programs. Not if we continue to show poor judgment and allowing bad hires to make worse ones, though. JMO.

Why shouldn't a university strive to be great academically? Seems to be the reason for all of it.

I understand we all love Tennessee football and want to see it succeed but athletics should always be second to academics.

UT does have internal power struggles and it's been that way for a while. Different people want UT to be different things, which creates a bit of an identity problem. UT admin wants to be good at athletics, especially in the marquee sports. The Directors' Cup standing was an embarrassment. It's the level of commitment that's an issue.

If I was an AD, I would get fired the first time an administrator made a fuss about coaches salaries, because I'd respond with, "Let's talk about administrative bloat and it's role in jacking up tuition. What, exactly, would you say it is that you do here?"

Oh, the whole freaking system is corrupt. Tuition keeps rising for no real reason as college degrees become worth less and less. And we force people who could earn large sums of money at their craft (football, basketball, etc.) go to school so we get a form of free labor off of them while, as you said, everyone else gets rich.
