You do realize the vols are the richest SEC team. In 2015 we were 3rd in the nation with football generated revenue at 121 million. Only Texas and Notre dame were higher (hint, schools with their own network).
Check last years....

The problem is we just dont invest in football like other programs do, even ones who make less money, like Bama. They spend twice what we do while making less. Look close and you see a direct and convincing correlation between $$$ spent and success on the field. Our AD gets fat off fans and throws us table scraps.
How could the Fulmer firing have been handled better? And how does that impact us now?
Let me run you through an exercise how this works.
1 Butch gets fired
2 PattersonPetersonStoopsMeyerKelly (PPSMK) all have Butch's number on their phone in a favorites list called "coaches at big schools" and give him a call
3 Butch describes the landscape here with the fan base (negative, impatient, unrealistic expectations, hateful) and says he wishes he'd listened to Dooley when he talked to him five years ago (who said he wished he'd listened to Kiffin)
4 PPSMK, having been there and done that, withdraw interest
These people know each other, talk to each other, and with occasional exception, are fond of each other. They are honest with each other.
VolNation can't name one coach who carried a major reputation to a new school where that school and its fans had run the previous coach in the ground. I predict it won't be different with us this time.
This happens literally everywhere. Alabama fans do it. Auburn fans. Texas fans. Michigan fans.
What actually happens is that the most successful coaches are arrogant. They talk to each other about how they can't believe Coach X is at this program with these resources and he is failing miserably. They talk about how they would win with those resources. They are confident they can do it better than the prior person.
This is a job, a very high paying one. Competitive people rise to the top. Confident people rise to the top. People who care about fans hurting their feelings never make it to this level.
Then why did we end up with KiffinDooleyJones?
It's crazy to me that this is the popular topic in the middle of the season..and we've only lost 2 games.. ppl act like it's a fore-gone conclusion that butch is gone. He's not even gone yet
Kiffin was the 1st choice. He was the hottest coach that year and turned down other offers to come here. He was the top coordinator for the USC juggernaut and had NFL HC experience. Because it ended poorly doesn't mean it wasn't the hire we wanted.
Dooley was a direct result of Kiffin leaving how he did and the BoT wanting someone who was the direct opposite in personality of Kiffin. Plus there was an NCAA cloud around when Kiffin left.
Jones is the result of Dooley's depletion of the roster and failing to finalize Gruden and Charlie Strong backing out of the job at the last minute when Louisville dropped a load of money on him.
None of them were because fans are mean.
Worst thing the University of Tennessee does is hire people. They are horrible at it.
Proof: Mike Hamilton, Davy Hart, Lame Kiffin, Derek Doolfus, Donnie Criminal, Cuongo Martin and Daffy Davenport. You couldn't hit this many losers if you really tried to hire the wrong person

Look--we made 80 million profit
Alabama made less than 50 million profit from about the same income as Tenn
How smart does Currie have to be?????.
You are telling me Kiffin was our first choice? His head coaching record was 5-15 at the time. I don't doubt you. It's just worse than I thought.
Yes, the Raiders were seen as an unwinnable situation because Al Davis was insane. Also, NFL results being poor have almost no bearing on college success. We've seen it with Saban, Spurrier, Chip Kelly and tons of others.
He was the top choice for every top opening that year due to his work at the USC dynasty and his ability to deliver a staff with his father as the DC.
Kiffin even compromised and took less money to pay his assistants top dollar. A common theme in hires here and a sticking point, along with a few others that prevented Gruden's hire here.
No. Not this time. Peyton is doing what he needs to do. We didn't have him last time, or the time before. I think we'll all be happy with the outcome.

I don't recall Kiffin being viewed as the hottest coach. I remember Cutcliffe, Muschamp and others being discussed a lot before Kiffin's name even came up. Saying that he was the best one we could get is a lot different than saying he was the best available. What other schools did he turn down to come to Tennessee?
