NFL success does not often translate to CFB success and vice versa. The only coach I am aware of who succeeded as a HC at both levels is Carroll.
Saban, Sherman, Spurrier, Kelly, Erickson,... are notable names that had success in one but not the other.
Gruden has been out of coaching for several years. He has never recruited. He has not coached an amateur athlete in 28 years.
As an NFL coach, he about 20 assistants to coach 53 players vs the 10-15 if you count GA's to coach over 100 in college. When work is over in the NFL... you go home. You have no direct responsibility for what the players do on their own time. In college, the HC is responsible for everything a player does or doesn't do.
There is a LOT more risk to this pipe dream than most ever consider.
True that, I'm willing to gamble on Gruden he has a really good gig making tons of money but if made the right offer he might accept the headaches that come with being the HC of a P5 program. Approach him and let him name his price and pay it.
Shaw at Stanford does not get near the athletes there which he would and could pull at UT. One of the things his teams all have no matter talent is toughness. Those guys play good football year in and year out under Shaw. Throw money at him until he shows up. I think he gives Saban a run for his money in short order.
he could get Cutcliff to come as OC.
Kirby Smart would be acceptable.
If you notice a defensive scheme you are correct. It was more emabarrasing to be shut out then give up 41 points.
Since GA shut us out they won this game in the first 5 mins. The Int lead to 3 for them and we never threatened to score. Defense... Defense Defense.

1. Johnson and Switzer also has success at both levels. Harbaugh is not done winning on either level.
2. The reason successful college coaches tend to struggle in the NFL is more difficult.
1. Jon Gruden
2. Gary Patterson
3. Bob Stoops
After those guys all have restraining orders against me:
4. Chip Kelly
5. Justin Fuente
6. Brent Venables
After the top four, I will definitely go back and forth between a few names.
Scott Frost would be on the list if he wasnt definitely going to Nebraska.
Names people mention that I wouldnt be enthusiastic about:
Mike Leach
Les Miles
Names people mention that should not be considered:
Tee Martin
Bobby Petrino
That doesn't explain why so few NFL coaches succeed in CFB. I know there aren't a ton who go that direction... Sherman was a good coach at GB and got fired at TAM. The jury is still out on Lovie Smith but he had to settle for Illinois... Really? Dave Wandstedt was a failure at Pitt after having some NFL success.
I'm not sure it is more difficult. The gameday competition is for sure. But college coaches then spend days on the road recruiting plus the investment they have to make in the academics and behavior of their players. NFL coaches don't have to be a parent... just a coach. They're both difficult but in different ways.
If you could hire Jones to coach from January 4th til spring ball then spring ball to August 1st... and hire Gruden to do the rest... that might work well.:loco:
Thoughts on Brohm? I think he could be a very good fit.
