Give me your Top 3 canidates...

If we are going for a coordinator with no HC experience then I vote for Mike Bloomgren. His resume is better than Tee, or Jim Bobs, and is probably equal to Venables. That being said my top 3 would be 1)Patterson. 2)Durkin 3)Kelly.

NFL success does not often translate to CFB success and vice versa. The only coach I am aware of who succeeded as a HC at both levels is Carroll.

Saban, Sherman, Spurrier, Kelly, Erickson,... are notable names that had success in one but not the other.

Gruden has been out of coaching for several years. He has never recruited. He has not coached an amateur athlete in 28 years.

As an NFL coach, he about 20 assistants to coach 53 players vs the 10-15 if you count GA's to coach over 100 in college. When work is over in the NFL... you go home. You have no direct responsibility for what the players do on their own time. In college, the HC is responsible for everything a player does or doesn't do.

There is a LOT more risk to this pipe dream than most ever consider.

True that, I'm willing to gamble on Gruden he has a really good gig making tons of money but if made the right offer he might accept the headaches that come with being the HC of a P5 program. Approach him and let him name his price and pay it.

Why? Why do we want a guy with zero college HC experience, who hasn't coached at any level in NINE years? I just don't get it.

Shaw at Stanford does not get near the athletes there which he would and could pull at UT. One of the things his teams all have no matter talent is toughness. Those guys play good football year in and year out under Shaw. Throw money at him until he shows up. I think he gives Saban a run for his money in short order.

I would agree with the guy in the middle. Most good defensive coordinators, make good head coaches, if they can hire a really good OC.

he could get Cutcliff to come as OC.
Kirby Smart would be acceptable.

If you notice a defensive scheme you are correct. It was more emabarrasing to be shut out then give up 41 points.

Since GA shut us out they won this game in the first 5 mins. The Int lead to 3 for them and we never threatened to score. Defense... Defense Defense.

1) Gary Patterson

2) Chris Peterson

3) Chip Kelly

4) Gruden (Kind of joking, but just in case)

Not much else is exciting...unless someone from the NFL or a crazy ungettable candidate emerges as possible. This is not popular, but I don’t see many others that are huge improvements from Butch. Lots of guys who can get us 8-9 wins and possibly more, but the rest of the field looks like a risk to me.

1. Johnson and Switzer also has success at both levels. Harbaugh is not done winning on either level.
2. The reason successful college coaches tend to struggle in the NFL is more difficult.

1. Jon Gruden
2. Gary Patterson
3. Bob Stoops

After those guys all have restraining orders against me:

4. Chip Kelly
5. Justin Fuente
6. Brent Venables

After the top four, I will definitely go back and forth between a few names.

Scott Frost would be on the list if he wasn’t definitely going to Nebraska.

Names people mention that I wouldn’t be enthusiastic about:

Mike Leach
Les Miles

Names people mention that should not be considered:

Tee Martin
Bobby Petrino

That doesn't explain why so few NFL coaches succeed in CFB. I know there aren't a ton who go that direction... Sherman was a good coach at GB and got fired at TAM. The jury is still out on Lovie Smith but he had to settle for Illinois... Really? Dave Wandstedt was a failure at Pitt after having some NFL success.

I'm not sure it is more difficult. The gameday competition is for sure. But college coaches then spend days on the road recruiting plus the investment they have to make in the academics and behavior of their players. NFL coaches don't have to be a parent... just a coach. They're both difficult but in different ways.

If you could hire Jones to coach from January 4th til spring ball then spring ball to August 1st... and hire Gruden to do the rest... that might work well.:loco:

Thoughts on Brohm? I think he could be a very good fit.

Gruden’s staff would blow Jones’ staff out of the water. It’s hard to see Gruden failing on the recruiting trail unless he just hates it.

I think it could work. I still would like to see a little more. He may well be worth considering at the end of the year. And if I'm being honest, part of me just kind of feels bad about hiring a coach away from his current school after one season (after seeing how badly it hurt us with Kiffin). It wouldn't stop me if I was an AD and I thought I had my guy, though.

Pie in the Sky candidates like Gruden and Stoops just make the fanbase look foolish to even think those two are remotely realistic options.
We got turned down by Strong and Gundy last time. Granted the job is more attractive now, but with that goes an unrealistic vocal part of the fanbase that will be calling for the next coach's head the first time he loses a game "they" think he should have won.
Its sad to see what has happened to a segment of our fanbase. Perhaps the know it all coach wannabes have always been there but with today's access to the internet and social media, and their having nothing better to do with their time, they seem to be everywhere like 17 year locusts that come every day of every year........

Who's available? Put the $$$$ out there and you'll find out who's available. Everyone has a price, Gruden and others.

I heard today that Kurt Roper and DeMontie Cross were getting some good looks. One certainly knows offense and the other is a genius on defense.
