Just curious. Do you think Fuente or Brohm are pipe dreams? Both are very good coaches. Both are great with the X's and O's and appear to be pretty good with the players too.
Both have favorable buyouts at their current school and a salary package lower than JOnes'.
He wins. You'd have to put a 24 hour chaperone on him... but he'd win.
Fuente would be my honest to God first pick if I thought we could get him. There were several openings back in 2015 and he quite deliberately chose Virginia Tech because of his relationship with Whit Babcock. I don't think we could lure him away if we wanted to. He already makes $3.2 million. He has one of the best DCs in the nation in Bud Foster (who probably wouldn't be following him). The ACC is easier than the SEC, but he has the resources to contend for a national title at VT. And fan expectations are less insane.
You could try throwing $6 million at him, but he probably just gets a raise from VT and stays put.
I think Dan Mullen is more realistic option to lure away with the "boatload of cash" option. You can't win national titles at Miss State. Though, honestly, I think I prefer Brent Venables or Scott Frost over Dan Mullen.
As for Brohm, he's a realistic candidate. I just don't understand the excitement around him. He has only been at Purdue for 1/3 of a season. Before that, he was at Western Kentucky for a few seasons, where he compiled a track record that looks similar to Butch Jones' at Cincinnati. Obviously, that doesn't mean he'll fare the same as Butch --- but I don't necessarily see why he would be considered the best candidate.
In sum, I don't think there is a true realistic "home run hire" here. There's no Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, or Jim Harbaugh. Even Chip Kelly, I think, would be a bit riskier than those three guys (not that he wouldn't succeed --- but does he want to be in Knoxville?).
Petrino would win while he was here, but I can't help but to notice that most of the places he's been have fallen pretty quickly after he left. Louisville was a disaster after he left. Arkansas was a disaster after he left. Is this just a coincidence?
