Don't understand this. Butch has three more seasons on his contract. No reason for Currie to extend him unless the results are significantly better as the season progresses.

It's really the optics of the whole thing. The coach can get up and leave at the drop of a hat, so it's functionally meaningless, but you have to protect from negative recruiting.

Prioritizing recruiting or the potential of negative recruiting over on field results is a mistake IMO. Make butch earn his extension. I just don't see the leverage from butch's position.

I don't disagree but I bet most saying this are also saying spend as much money as it Takes to get the right coach.
Well an extension is only buying a good recruiting class if you are willing to pay for it. I dont see the difference

It's pretty incredible that I have yet to hear one person, whether it be on here, social media, or in my day to day life who will say they'd be excited to have Butch Jones back in 2018.

Sure, there's a lot of "he'll win enough to stay" or "we're stuck with him", but the apathy has set in big time.

This is why I think even if we don't fire him he will take minor step down and coach elsewhere in 2018. If not he has lame-duck written all over him.

Does it not occur to you that all fans have different opinions? Just because they don't think like you, they must be apathetic? I lost some faith in the coaching last week. Regardless, I am excited about our talent in 2018 whoever the coach is.

It's basically a lame duck coach. You have to give your coach all the tools to succeed whether that's extending Butch or hiring a new coach. You just can't allow other schools to negative recruit against you.

I'm not sure that 8-4 was some sort of consensus. A lot of people, myself included, had us better than that, in the 9-3 or 10-2 range. We should be off to a 3-0 start already.

There was also a pretty big divide as to whether 8-4 was good enough for an extension (which is really the important part here).

I do agree that I will believe we have another coach next year when I see it.

Before the season started, I proposed we put a sticky at the top of the recruiting forum that made clear what the preseason expectations were. I think it was near unanimous in the media that we were an 8-4 type team. I had a feeling as the 8-4 season actually played out, our fans would start revising up the expectations to say we were supposed to be better. Reality is, most people thought we'd be pretty bad this year.

Agents have started to realize they can swindle ADs by claiming they can't recruit without 4-5 years on their current contract (even if everybody knows the coach will be fired long before 5 years has passed).

I'm not in the media. I felt that I had a better handle on the specifics of our team than most in the national media. My prediction had been 10-2. It's not looking so good right now, but the talent should be there to attain that record.

Are you saying an 8-4 record is pretty bad?

ive backed away from the ledge. Will support the team and coach as long as he's here but he can't afford one stumble along the way or I'm back on it,a ny loss to UK, Vandy, Missouri, SC is unforgivable. Let's beat UMASS and then obliterate UGA!

8-4 at UT should be the bare minimum. When it becomes a trend (3 years straight), if becomes pretty bad IMO

The media doesn't set expectations for our athletic programs. It doesn't matter what they think. The media and fans can predict, but UTAD's expectations are based on internal goals. When one of UT's five mission goals is to win championships and the AD says the expectation for the football program is to win championships, starting with the division title, that is the expectation.

Will 8-4/4-4 win the division? Unlikely. We'll probably have to go 9-3 or 10-2 to win the division.

Bet you can find thousands of those from lsu fans before last Saturday.

And they STATE it? Where can I read an UGA fan wetting him/her self over Kirby coming back next season?

You're smarter than this response, butchna.

Just because Bama/OSU/UM/Clemson/Washington fans aren't wasting bandwidth with posts literally stating "I am excited that our head football coach will be returning next season!" doesn't mean the fans don't fee that way.

No use stating a thought like that unless there was previous reason to believe that coach wouldn't be returning. A lot of CFB fanbases are happy with their coaches, not just the ones that have them in the top 10 every year either.
