I think Currie has a clear idea how he's going to handle most scenarios this year. He met with each HC and set very clear expectations for this year. There's a good chance that UT will part ways with at least one HC and possibly two this year. And if it comes to that, it will be a positive change for the university and its marquee sports programs.

The other being wbb?

Les is better than Butch

Les does not seem like a genius, but he didn't need to be either. Part of his success always was that if he has an RB nearing 200 yds on the day and a shaky passing game, he has sense enough to pound the rock when he needs points in the red zone. It's not rocket science.

Not that I like the idea of him being our next coach, but this is clearly one thing he's got over Jones.

Grass chomper made plenty of bone headed decisions in his time at LSU. Butch has made the same here. Only difference is one had a national championship and the other doesn't. Butch has to change or he's going to be shown the door, does it need to be right now, no. If he doesn't open up his eyes and see that his passive play style and playing not to lose, makes us lose more than win, then he needs to go though.

He was 114-34 at LSU

I hope this is the case.

If Butch isn't coaching for his job nothing will change.

I get the feeling Currie is going to try to leave his mark.

So if he does turn it around and we get to 8-4, then what? You want an extension? Let's see how he does next year? I doubt it will be better than 8-4. Give him till the class of 18's junior year?

This is a good point. 8-4 with losses to UF/UGA/BAMA/LSU is basically Currie's nightmare scenario.

I'd say if we go 8-4, it will probably have to come down to Currie's judgment on who we lost to and how well coached/competitive we were in those games. Convincing wins against USC/Mizzou/UK/Vandy and close, competitive losses to 2/3 of Bama/UGA/LSU? Butch gets another year for pulling things together, IMO (a LOT of coaches would implode after this game...Butch may, but we don't know yet).

8/4 with similar games to today where coaching lost us multiple games and we eked out 2/3 of those USC/UK/Mizzou/Vandy games on talent alone? Refuse to renegotiate Butch's contract and coerce him into making a move OR fire him straight up if you're confident you can make an upgrade.

This team isn't getting to the next level this year no matter what happens. This ain't a playoff team.

There's really no reason to cut ties before late October/November-ish at the absolute earliest. Cut ties now and you're telling our players that you've given up on this season. Some might feel Butch was unjustly fired.

What exactly is the difference in making a coaching change now vs November/December?

Yep. Im not a huge fan of the mid season moves either unless you are at risk of missing a bowl or really want to give a guy on staff an audition (a la Dabo). This is how the Fulmer situation got mishandled. I still believe it was time for him to go, but you don't just march him out execution style with games left on the schedule.

if we lose to georgia we are basically 3 games back. its over. roll with jg and build for the future. let him take his lumps the rest of the year it will be meaningless anyway.

Exactly.

Unless you really believe that Scott or Shoop is a future SEC HC (don't get me started on Hoke lol), then you let things play out deep into the schedule.

Currie should demand growth.

8-4 is stagnant.

If I am Currie, I sit Butch down and say:

You want an extension. We play for championships here at TN. You weren't my choice for coach but from people all around you have done a great job bring back the talent to a championship level.

Let's make this simple - you must win the SEC east. If you can deliver and show this growth we can talk extension.

You have the talent and facilities to accomplish this goal. This is the goal. Fall short and we will look for another coach.

Good luck.

Man he barely got his hands on the ball. The dude doesn't drop passes. A hitch thrown high like that is asking for it. A pass coming that fast and high enough for him to jump is terrible. One or two things will happen. It's getting picked or your WR will have back problems.

Never said it was a good pass BUT it did go threw his hands. It would've been better if it was worse and even higher where he could not get to it. You the DB guy and you know that was not the traditional pick six throw that we all think about traditionally. He did not just throw it to the DB who then housed it. It was tipped regardless if in his hands or not. Not blaming Calloway but when you typed out pick six last week I am sure you were not thinking it would be a high pass that was touched by our WR when it happened. But you can be as stubborn as Butch. Last sentence is a :). But you and him are both stubborn as heck.

I think this a step back as well, lateral move. Les has let the game pass him by.

I don't think Les Miles is anywhere close to the answer. Prefer to go with a G5 up and comer than that.

Les better than Butch? I won't bother with that until it looks like it will happen.

7 of his 14 years were 10+ wins at LSU. 4 of those 10+ win seasons were all Les' players.

I'm not advocating to hire Les, but he is a much better coach than Butch

Agreed.

He may be past his prime, but his prime was far, far superior to Butch's.

Im not sure he'll ever be a big time coach again, but I think he could be sneaky good at the right school with the right staff. He's gotta be paired with a good OC though.

Kind of a pointless conversation to have because the odds are 100-percent stacked against Butch winning the East right now. Losing to UF means we're already two games back with a road trip to Bama looming. You drop one more SEC game, which is likely given the improving East, and you're toast.

Maybe it would at least inspire him to coach for his next job.
