Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the high expectations and I'm glad our program has them. To further explain my perspective, I'm all for expecting to win the East every year. But even with the best coach in America, we aren't actually going to win it every year. And one of the primary reasons we won't is the natural ebb and flow of rosters turning over. We had the team to win the East last year and we didn't get it done. I'm not 100% sold that was all on CBJ - I think injuries played a huge role. So for that reason I'm willing to give him another shot. This year for any coach would be the rebuilding year since we lost so much. So while I think we should compete for the East, I won't be surprised if we don't win it. But we are playing a lot of young guys that will be back next year with a top 10 recruiting class. So next year there will be absolutely no excuse and I think all Vol fans would agree with that.
Anyway - these conversations of coaching changes are incredibly premature given that we're 2-0 heading into Florida week. Let's give the boys a chance to prove themselves on the field.
I've never been big on firing coaches either but my first thread in the FF was the night of the loss at Florida in 2011. In most all threads it seemed like everyone was wanting to fire Dooley. I only signed up for the forum in Sept. So I was curious who they thought we should get. I was genuinely curious so I started my first thread and it was entitled "Coaching candidates" or something like that. I got a mixed reaction, very hostile from the Dooley brownshirts, but the thread took off and there were a lot of names offered. Some people wanted the thread deleted - a mod, could have been Freak, responded that it was the most active thread on the front page, no way did it deserved deletion. My timing was great that night.
I know we're 2-0 but this let's wait and see stuff is okay for some and not for others. The biggest concern is obviously the defense. My position is if you like the defense then cool, if not, raise holy hell. It may not make a difference but collectively the message will get through.
I have another concern which I think Butch is very much aware of. What is the key to winning on the road? The answer comes down to 2 words, Mental Toughness. We're doing pretty good at home and are perfect in neutral site games but we need to improve our mental toughness if we are going to win at a higher level on the road in rivalry games. I think that's something they've been trying to work on this year so that tells me that the staff isn't asleep at the wheel on this either. We lost 3 games last year that were all arguably winnable. All 3 were on the road.
