Recruiting Forum Football Talk XXXVI

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the high expectations and I'm glad our program has them. To further explain my perspective, I'm all for expecting to win the East every year. But even with the best coach in America, we aren't actually going to win it every year. And one of the primary reasons we won't is the natural ebb and flow of rosters turning over. We had the team to win the East last year and we didn't get it done. I'm not 100% sold that was all on CBJ - I think injuries played a huge role. So for that reason I'm willing to give him another shot. This year for any coach would be the rebuilding year since we lost so much. So while I think we should compete for the East, I won't be surprised if we don't win it. But we are playing a lot of young guys that will be back next year with a top 10 recruiting class. So next year there will be absolutely no excuse and I think all Vol fans would agree with that.

Anyway - these conversations of coaching changes are incredibly premature given that we're 2-0 heading into Florida week. Let's give the boys a chance to prove themselves on the field.

I've never been big on firing coaches either but my first thread in the FF was the night of the loss at Florida in 2011. In most all threads it seemed like everyone was wanting to fire Dooley. I only signed up for the forum in Sept. So I was curious who they thought we should get. I was genuinely curious so I started my first thread and it was entitled "Coaching candidates" or something like that. I got a mixed reaction, very hostile from the Dooley brownshirts, but the thread took off and there were a lot of names offered. Some people wanted the thread deleted - a mod, could have been Freak, responded that it was the most active thread on the front page, no way did it deserved deletion. My timing was great that night. :)

I know we're 2-0 but this let's wait and see stuff is okay for some and not for others. The biggest concern is obviously the defense. My position is if you like the defense then cool, if not, raise holy hell. It may not make a difference but collectively the message will get through.

I have another concern which I think Butch is very much aware of. What is the key to winning on the road? The answer comes down to 2 words, Mental Toughness. We're doing pretty good at home and are perfect in neutral site games but we need to improve our mental toughness if we are going to win at a higher level on the road in rivalry games. I think that's something they've been trying to work on this year so that tells me that the staff isn't asleep at the wheel on this either. We lost 3 games last year that were all arguably winnable. All 3 were on the road.

Talking about who we'll hire next is ridiculous. And I tend to be more optimistic/patient that some of you jokers on here.

Serious question, though. If Florida decides to run jet sweeps all day, how are we going to stop it?

edit: my first double post!!!

I'm on PC, used the quick reply box, and definitely didn't hit "post quick reply" twice...but it did take it forever to post.

I brought this up earlier, and was told that the we set the edge against GT. That was news to me

Tennessee VolNation at the Alamo:

"Heard that elite Mexican team is unbeatable. We're going to lose."

"Wait, what? We're not elite?"

"No, and under that guy Travis we never will be."

"Let's fahr that guy then."

"Can't do that, he's the guy Sam Houston put in charge here."

"Shoot, then let's get our horses and head back to Tennessee."

Nobody would ever have heard of the Tennessee Volunteers.

My coworker in Gainesville just told me he has power still, but most of Gainesville is without power at the moment. Thinks game will be played there as long as the power can get back. FWIW

With fairly strenuous recruiting rules that must be followed...he said, himself, that was a big reason he wouldn't coach in college.

I think he actually said it about the 20 hour practice requirement. He was notorious for getting up early and watching film and preparing for the next opponent. He said he would violate the players' 20 hour rule in the first couple of weeks.

It seems to me that our scheme is to have the DEs pinch and expect the LBs to get to the edge. That's just what I see. Surely if that isn't the case the coaches would correct it right? If that is the case, we don't have, or aren't playing, the right linebackers to make this work. Should see more nickel this week so having Gaulden there will help but he can't take on 2-3 blocks and make the play. Has to have help. I think Bituli can get there. Not confident in Jumper or McDowell.

On the positive side, we got to see some tough running from CFA.

He really looked good. I hope that is a sign of what to expect. He showed some real speed on that long TD run and some power too. Glad to see that from him and hope he keeps it up. Jordan looked good also, and Coleman had a nice spin move. I think we're loaded at RB

I've noticed that too. Neither qb looks all that comfortable. Another thing I've noticed that they look up tight. They don't look like they're having fun.

They look uptight?

Honestly, if we need to fire Butch, just give Gillespie the job. He can obviously evaluate talent. He can recruit. He can inspire players, and he can coach.

Get him a good play caller and a stellar DC...
